And you failed to see anything there that caught your attention?
I have to admit to thinking that Dalrymple and the present
coaching staff know a bit more than you on this issue, so
forgive me for thinking that most will listen to them rather
than your caustic appraisal of his abilities.

Maybe they (Chiefs) wanted a different style/outlook - not every
Head Coach/DOR has the same DNA - as we saw with Gustard here.

So far as I can see, all I am doing is raising some legitimate
questions, none "caustic" in nature. I am neutral on the subject
— I have no idea whether this will be a great appointment or
another in the series of JK and PG. Time will tell.

resources in the coaching department" were identified in the
middle of last season that haven't been resolved since in
delivering a Premiership title? I appreciate there may have been
a gap to fill when Gustard left, but the existing coaching group
and senior players seem to have more than filled it

The whole review that was spoken about in March/April of the
Club from top to bottom from somebody Edwards I think. It has
been well covered previously. Also on zoom Club meeting with
Billy. They could never continue without one other being added.

see what he's adding, where, and how the coaches relate to him.
Is he their boss for example? Is he Millard's boss, or are they
on a level, reporting to, say, Laurie? If he is the coaches'
boss, presumably he has power to hire and fire, and/or to tell
them he wants aspects of the game played or coached differently.

It might be worth re-reading the announcement, as it clarifies
things:
Commenting on Matson’s appointment, Harlequins
CEO Laurie Dalrymple said: “We’ve had a phenomenally successful
season as a Club, and we can’t wait to see Tabai join us to take
Harlequins a step further.
“Tabai will lead our four-man coaching team, while Billy’s role
will now evolve into Director of Rugby Performance, overseeing
all aspects of the performance side of the Club for our Men’s,
Women’s and Academy teams as well as their support teams around
them.
He's the lead/head coach, but I don't think he's got powers of
Hire/Fire over the other coaches. In business terms he's the
Team Leader, not the Manager. Billy has the overall
responsibility, so he will be the one making the decisions. I
would expect Matson to have some say though. Billy is back to
the High Level planning and oversight of all the teams &
coaching that he was originally brought in for

You have to piece it together from various things that have been
said over the last few years, but I think it's pretty clear.
- Millard is Director of Rugby Performance. Piecing together
what's been said about the role in the past, that includes all
aspects of the playing side - men's, women's and academy teams.
He's responsible for all the planning around recruitment and
development of players and coaches, succession planning, player
welfare, medical and fitness. Basically everything on the rugby
side that takes place off the pitch - JK identified that doing
that while also being a hands on coach was too much for one
person, which is why we split the roles. Once Gustard left,
Millard stepped down and took on most of Gustard's day to day
coaching role, which meant that a lot of the other stuff went on
the back burner
- Matson will take on Gustard's role, which is Head Coach. There
seems to be quite a lot of hands on coaching involved, but also
some more strategic elements - looking at what development the
coaches might need, challenging their thinking, bringing in
external ideas, thinking about where the game will evolve to
next - and also keeping them on an even keel when things wobble.
- Flannery, Evans, Bomb and Mulchrone are responsible for
specific skills or areas of the game, albeit with Flannery
looking after the overall defensive system (having taken it back
from JTH) and Evans planning the attack. But we have to remember
that they are all in their first or second coaching job and have
a lot to learn, particularly about how to cope when things go
wrong. They've only really known success since they've had the
reins, and I am pretty sure that part of Matson's role is to
help round out their experience and help them cope. Millard
could (and to some extent did) do this - but as I've said above,
he's got a much bigger job to do.
- JTH stepped up to help out, but is now back to doing Academy
coaching and (IIRC) being Head Coach of Worthing.
That's a collage of pieces and there may be some gaps or
overlaps, but I would be surprised if it isn't 80-90% right.
On hire and fire, Matson will have an input into the sort of
players and coaches he wants, and into where the coaches need to
develop, but ultimately Millard signs the contracts and calls
the shots. Matson makes it clear in his interview that he knows
he's coming in to work with the existing coaching setup and not
to make wholesale changes.

Whilst I agree that none of us can be sure it will work out for
the best, when you use the phrase "...nothing whatsoever in
Matson's CV that impresses me" it doesn't sound at all
neutral...

Good to hear that you are looking on the bright side from your
neutral position!
My take on it without any inside knowledge of course is that
having sacked Gustard for the negative influence he had on
almost every aspect of the club and following the subsequent
winning of the Premiership by going back to our traditional
style and seeing how the players and coaches united to achieve
this it is a little unlikely that the board would appoint
someone with the inclination or power to disrupt all of that.

Whatever we all may think, we have to give the guy a chance and
hope he adds more positivity to our already excellent coaching
set-up. I can't see any reason this won't happen so onwards to
more success!

My understanding is that Billy is his boss, as he is now
Director of Rugby across men’s, women’s and the academy. Whether
Tabai has Bomb, Nev, Jerry and Charlie reporting into him, or
they all report into Billy, I don’t know.
Either way Bucks, you seem very determined to see this
appointment of an experienced coach who doesn’t want to disrupt
what’s already happened but complement the team and add some
coaching of the coaches as a negative decision so no matter what
we say, you will think it’s bad
