But he didn't really do that - Simmonds was not available when
Umaga was picked.

He sort of did though - by keeping Umaga in and not calling up
Simmonds. Plenty of other players got released v recently...

Really like this England squad. If i was running the show (Sadly
Quins didn't approach either) Id pick..
1. Obano
2. Blamire
3. Genge
4. Ewels
5. Munga
6. Ted Hill
7. Underhill
8. Dombrandt
9. Mitchell
10. Smith
11. Bassett
12. Slade
13. Marchant
14. Radwan
15 Malins
I think this gives a good balance of young up and coming players
whilst supported by players who aren't strangers to
internationals.

If Kenningham doesn't get called up then Lynagh probably doesn't
even think about it but that probably has made him feel a bit
low about not being selected. Accepting that Khan (see above)
actually plays the way EJ wants a 7 to play so would be a
shoe-in.
In Lynagh's defence, Radawan, Sleighthome, Furbank etc haven't
just scored 4 tries in 2 knock out games including wining a
final.

Not sure I'd agree with that, MQ - you have quite a lot of
players out of position.
Genge is a loosehead, not a tighthead; Ewels is arguably more of
a 5 than a 4; Slade hasn't played inside centre in ages.
I'd probably be looking at something more like:
Genge Blamire Hill
McNally Ewels
Ludlow Underhill Dombrandt
Mitchell Smith
Lawrence Marchant
Bassett Radwan Steward (I'd like to see what Steward can do; he
looks more like a natural fullback than Malins)
That said, I hope that Eddie tries out a few players, especially
in the back row. I'd love to see Kenningham take the next step
and get at least part of a game.

Has Underhill recovered from his concussion?
You're picking Lawrence out of position there, poorfour ;-)
(Kelly or Ojomoh are the options I think - but I know Slade and
Lawrence are considered to be potential 12s by Eddie). Would you
consider Malins on the wing? It's worked very well for Bristol
and I think it'd add a lot to the team - and while I like
Bassett, I don't think he'll go any further than these games.

My bad with Genge, forgot he was a loosehead rather than tight.
I know slade has featured more for Exeter at 13 however I think
he offered more of a playmaking option and offers something
different, whereas i think a midfield combo of Lawrence and
Marchant has less variety.

Lynagh's scoring rate of 2.3 points per game is the best in the
club apart from the fly halves (Smith is on 9+), and a fraction
ahead of Dombrandt at the 4th decimal place. Kenningham's is
also remarkable, for a flanker, at 1.667. It's not quite as good
as Sleightholme's though - he's on 3.2. Way better than
Steward's, on 0.5. Couldn't find Radwan's stats.
Who knows what Eddie is looking for? I'd have to say that
Lynagh's done all he possibly could to stake a claim. Not only
has his try scoring been excellent, but one or two mistakes
aside he's been exceptionally solid in defence. Not many players
can stop a charging Sam Simmonds, but Lynagh did it twice in the
final and took down Radradra the previous week for good measure.
By the way, because I am a bit sad that way, I worked out the
average points per game for our likely XXIII next season. In an
average game for Quins we should score over 30 points.

Not questioning that, but I think EJ probably thinks Joe S needs
a rest - had an extended season with European Cup win in October
and play-offs/final for Premiership during same month. He also
knows his game is the same type of game played by Ford/Farrell,
with minor variation - Umaga and Smith are different.
Also, like Lynagh, he missed a boat load of tackles - made 8,
missed 7 (Smith - 13/0): Lynagh made 4 and missed 6 (Murley
5/0): this might be one of the reasons Lynagh isn't in - he
needs to improve his defence: he can tackle - witness taking out
the other Simmonds early in the game, but he needs to be more
consistent. This is his first season - he's still a bit callow,
but has heaps of potential to be the real deal: his time will
come.

Slade was originally a 10 who played some 12, but it's been
clear over the years that he's a better player the further he
gets from 10. He can play 12 and has experience there but he's a
much better player at 13.
