While Hammond, Baxter and Beard have all featured this season, I
wouldn’t consider them as having made a breakthrough yet.
Tizard’s probably closer, but not to the same degree as
Kenningham or Lynagh.
I’d expect that group to be getting more game time next season.
Alongside that, you have Riley, Hyde, Lennox and Slevin who
aren’t far behind.

Cheers- I don't know how much is expected of
Hammond/Baxter/Beard so it probably should've been phrased as
"is this a really exciting group or are we waiting for the U18s
to really make an impact".
Lennox could be interesting! Hyde I was just viewing as a
signing more than anything but I guess he's gone back to our
academy?

doesn’t necessarily mean breaking the bank. Brian Byrne didn’t
have a club when he joined Bristol but then went on to do really
well before he picked up an injury. Cost effective, good
signings are out there and the success of some of our recent,
unheralded acquisitions gives me some confidence that we’re
doing a decent job of identifying the right kind of players.

James Cronin would be ideal if Jerry can have a word. I would
have been happy with Simon McIntyre too. Again, I’m not looking
for stars.

Cronin has gone to Biaritz I think
Re Baldwin, did anyone notice on Saturday, When we won the first
pen (that lead to the LO for the Pen try), as soon as the ref
blew up, he was pointing to the corner, shouting at the rest of
the team. When the others were discussing what to do, he was
pointing to the corner and I think it was him that made the
decision. He was in no doubt what to do.
The academy players should get some decent games next season in
the A league comp. Welsh/Irish/Scottish and Italian sides are
joining up for a new league. Could make it a bit more
competitive

I guess retention will now be the priority. With success comes
expectation and I'm sure the club will be making sure the likes
of Kenningham and Lynagh are receiving substantial pay rises.
That'll eat into the salary cap and may impact incomings.
I think we're all on the same page in not expecting Galactico
signings.
As highlighted by others, hooker, lock and 12 are the main
concerns. On the face of it a first choice hooker is most
concerning but I'm sure the coaches have a good idea as to which
of our prospects are ready to step up. I thought they were mad
going into last season with just one recognised seven in Evans,
but they were clearly confident that Kenningham could compete if
needed.

@JammyGit - I think they’re all regarded as talented players
with very good futures.
It might be a slower introduction for Baxter given he’s a prop,
but the potential is certainly there.
Personally, I thought Hammond typically looked better than
Tizard at age grade level but Tizard has just looked more
physically ready for senior rugby. Hammond basically needs to
bulk up a bit as I don’t think it’s ability - he’s just a bit
lean for a Premiership lock right now.
Beard is highly rated and looks ready to go once he recovers
from his injury.
Not seen much of Hyde but I know we were really disappointed to
lose him to Ulster so hopefully him coming back is an under the
radar coup.
Lennox has been around the first team squad for a while without
really getting a look-in. I’m not really sure why he hasn’t had
a chance yet, but it may be because he prefers 13 where we’ve
typically been pretty well stocked.
I’d also mention Riley who might well leapfrog Head and Musk.
He’s doing well as our sole representative in the U20s right
now.

Pretty much agree with that. Anyanwu had been on DR with Esher
(played wing and Cen). Last season he was due to be with L
Scottish (I think), but them pulling out of the league for year
scuppered that. I thought he looked pretty useful in the
Friendly with Bath.
If we do bring in a centre, we can do it under injury
dispensation as Lasike is apparently out till around March time,
so will not hit cap space (although will still cost the club of
course)

Defending mauls, space and making tackles count: the youngsters
need more time to develop awareness of space and how to defend
it, out wide and midfield; there will always be mis-matches but
devising a solution so that lumps can position themselves to
force attackers towards better suited backs rather than become
passive tackle bags that are easy to run around, for example,
but every team suffers this.
There have been times in games when opposing twinkle-toed types
have run rings around our defence and our defenders fall off
tackles like ice cream on hot Christmas pudding; although when
Marcus does this its fantastic - best example when he ran around
5 LI players to win the game.
OR always score 2 more tries than opposition...

Thanks, QC - I've mostly seen the younger guys (i.e. Cleaves and
co) so that's good to hear.

My friends in bath tell me we are getting one of their hookers I
think Jack walker (sorry if this is already news or got the name
wrong). They thought very highly of him and gutted to lose him.
So with Gray staying, bringing him in and the youngsters staying
this year do we really think they will be getting another more
established hooker?
