It was a Gatland team and they also had a crazy run of injuries,
they were outclassed from the start.
He's very well regarded from his time at Bath.

It’s a very tough gig. If we don’t do as well next year he’ll
get the blame regardless.

I'm not so sure, I think it's a great job to come into. We have
a very good squad, good youngsters coming through, a great set
of coaches. A massive feel good factor. Next season it is all
about not standing still, we were guilty of that before. We
dont need huge changes, we need someone to come in and
suppliment/add to what we have. Some sensible signings (I like
what we have done so far). I'm sure the club are all too aware
of what went wrong before, and what has gone right since. That
will be a huge part of deciding who comes in. If its ot broken,
dont fix it, but we can make improvements. Despite what has
been said, defence will need addressing next season.

I agree. I think the fact that we’re looking for a Head Coach
suggests that we’re looking for someone to be hands-on. Evans,
Jones and Flannery have really stepped up but are still
relatively inexperienced and I think we want someone to guide
them and aid their development. To my mind, a DoR is more of a
strategic organisation role which is more or less what Millard
is there to do.
Matson typically seems to be well-liked by the players he works
with, so if he’s the man we’re going for, I think that bodes
pretty well.
The exciting thing is that this title win is well ahead of
schedule. As a squad, we’re at a fairly early stage of
development and I think there’s massive potential to keep
getting better. We need to invest in some quality
reinforcements, but I think the strength of our academy is going
to be really important when the cap cuts really hit. I feel
we’re in a better position to adapt to a reduced budget than
most other clubs and we already know we’ve got another wave of
talent to come through.

Let’s not get too excited about “quality reinforcements”. With
the reduced salary cap next season, we’ll have to lean more
heavily on home grown players and cheaper squad players.
Fortunately, so will everyone else and Quins’ current crop of
academy players looks very promising - arguably as good as if
not better than those who made up the 2012 squad.
In terms of squad depth, the challenging positions are now
loosehead (where Els ought to be good enough but we need to see
him fully fit) and 12, where the departure of Tapuai and Lang
leaves us a bit short on experience. However, other squads will
have similar problems - it’s all about who rises best to the
challenge.

The really good academy players are still a few years away from
breaking through, right? Or are there some we've not seen in the
senior side yet who are real talents?

Need a hooker. Break the bank.

Sensible reinforcements. Kerrod, Steele, Dombrandt, Northmore.
Recent examples of good players that have not broken the bank
but fitted in very well. Allan, David, plus Wilson and CSW (if
they sign) all seem to fit the type we need imho
Re the youngsters, I'm looking forward to seeing Musk. I thought
he was our best hooker at one point. Just had a season at
Richmond which will do him the world of good. Also looking
forward to seeing Hyde and Lennox get some game time

I’m not expecting a spending spree.
Baldwin has been a key player in us winning the title and has
really underlined the importance of a reliable, high quality
hooker.
I’d be happy with a player of equivalent standard which doesn’t
necessarily mean breaking the bank. Brian Byrne didn’t have a
club when he joined Bristol but then went on to do really well
before he picked up an injury. Cost effective, good signings are
out there and the success of some of our recent, unheralded
acquisitions gives me some confidence that we’re doing a decent
job of identifying the right kind of players.
I agree on Els, but we still need someone better than SGB. James
Cronin would be ideal if Jerry can have a word. I would have
been happy with Simon McIntyre too. Again, I’m not looking for
stars.
