It sounds very much like Marcus will be given a shot this
summer. In reality, it doesn’t answer the big question: can he
impose his game against the best international sides? I’m sure
he and England will look good against the USA and Canada. In a
game where winning collisions is so important can he provide the
structure against sides that can match England physically? Very
few fly halves like Marcus manage to impose themselves on the
game for any length of time nowadays: look how Beauden Barrett
has moved back to 15…..
I am a massive fan of his, he has been brilliant for Quins this
season but don’t underestimate the difference in the quality of
defences at Premiership and international level.

Hasn't Barrett moved back to 15 for a quite Marcus Smith-like 10
to take his place? Barrett's problem is he relied heavily on
pure athleticism and wasn't the brightest or most tactically
astute 10.

Was it just me or was his defence on another level yesterday
too, he was knocking back some of the big boys who targeted him.
Very impressed.

That was a follow-on from last week. I posted them earlier but
the stats showed he made the second most tackles in the match
against Bristol, with only Ben Earl slightly ahead (and Earl
missed more). Plus he hammered a bunch of rucks.
His defence and general desire and work rate have been
outstanding in these championship games. He really, really wants
to win. Couldn't ask for a better attitude.
Stats say he made 13 tackles and missed none this week. Which
means that across the semi-final and final, he made 29 tackles
and missed 4. Ridiculously good.

Agreed - I can't see Eddie changing his approach now he has been
completely vindicated by the RFU review and has total autonomy
over the tactical style in the absence of any other senior
coaches in the England camp. Whilst I wouldn't want any of our
young star players' England opportunities to be thwarted this
Summer, I fear their attacking instincts could be dulled by an
England call-up. Look what happened to Jacob Umaga after his
inclusion in the squad last year - his form completely fell
away.

Yes Richie Mouanga is the 10 for the Crusaders. Very much in the
Smith mould. He even has the goose step. He was the starting all
black recently, wit lh BB at FB. You have to be a very good
player to dethrone BB.

Yup Mo'unga is a very good fly half - Barrett's a very good
rugby player (good enough to be the best in the world at one
point) but there's aspects to his tactical game that can be real
weaknesses. Mo'unga's only real problem is the occasional big
error and being defensively fairly poor.

Yeah - 'shaky and flaky' only took Wasps unexpectedly to last
years' Premiership final

Umaga with Gopperth nearby is better than Umaga without Gopperth
nearby.
