Shame the bars at the Stoop couldn't be open for us.

Still can’t quite believe it. How they found the energy to keep
going for the full 80 like that I’ll never know.
Let’s hope we build on that for next season. Exciting times
ahead!

I haven’t posted here in a while, perhaps five years or so.
Truth is, I’d fallen out of love with the game a bit, moved
around for work, kept an eye on things, sure, but not followed
anything like as closely. This team’s gravity has dragged me
right back into diehard fanship all over again and my god am I
glad they did. Games like yesterday and performances like we
have seen in the last six months are why we all love this game,
this team, this club and its identity.
There’ll be a lot of comparison between the classes of 2012 and
2021 and rightly so; it’s easily drawn. They’re in some respects
similar. Both sides had a rock solid tight 5 that could impress
itself on and turn games when needed. Both had a phenomenal
8-9-10 axis through which things are run. Both had the capacity
to entertain and did things the “right” way – The Harlequins
Way. So much of the DNA of the former is in the latter – you
need only look at the personnel involved. Care, Marler and even
Gray on the pitch to Evans and Turner Hall off it. What happened
in the last six months is, in part, muscle memory.
While that team was perhaps more complete, the class of 2021 is
way more dangerous. They scored 7 points a game more than the
class of 2012 and only really got going 7/8 games in. They
averaged >40 points a game at home since, and I emphasise this,
parting ways with their director of rugby six weeks into the
season. They are lethal from just about anywhere, and no one has
been able to defend the way in which they attack with all
fifteen men at once. That is why they stand alone, and is why
they’re champions.
The 2012 team was a product of a long build, arguably the
culmination of five years work or more spanning promotion,
through bloodgate, a cup win before finally cracking it. While
this team made a cup final last year, it feels completely
unrelated. Evans, Jones, Flannery and Millard do not get
anywhere near enough credit outside this club for what’s been
done here in such a short space of time.
A particular mention for Evans at this point, whose legendary
status is now surely confirmed as if it wasn’t already. Not many
make the journey up here and win a premiership, fewer still do
it as a player and as a coach. The way this side attacks is
clearly in his image and without him, Marcus doesn’t become the
player he has become either. Beyond this club, he is surely one
of the best imports to our club game in this country in a long,
long time. You can make a case for his arrival being the
starting point on the journey to the 2012 title, just as you can
his taking over of our attack being the catalyst for this one in
2021.
As for Marcus, I think we should take a second to realise how
lucky we are to have transitioned from one generational player
at the position to the next in the way that we have. Marcus
reminds me very strongly of Nev in the way he attacks the line
and accelerates; you can tell the mark of one on the other. Nev
lost that extra step with injury very quickly after coming here
and reinvented himself a bit, but Marcus is perhaps already even
better as a raw talent.
I understand the hesitancy about picking him for England until
now –England play with two fulcrums and Marcus doesn’t fit in to
that, but also you ask yourself how many *flair* fly halves have
been at the helm of world cup winning sides (it’s not many) –
but surely now we’re at the point where you have to build an
attacking identity around him? The big game experience is under
the belt. He’s gone right to the top.The same goes for
Dombrandt, Care, Marchant, many others. The last lions and six
nations squads contained zero Harlequins. One would surmise, no
longer.
There are so many knocking on the door. England don’t have two
better 9s than Care. They don’t have two better 8s than
Dombrandt. They don’t have many better wingers than Lynagh, if
they can convince him. A lot has been said about Marler. There’s
a place there if he wants it. Even if he doesn’t choose to
again, he too is now in the pantheon of legends alongside your
Jason Leonards etc at this club. We’ve been lucky to have him.
And like him, this team is easy to root for. It’s home grown,
organic success. It’s been next man up, the entire time. Guys
like Collier and Chisholm who have been part of the furniture
for years. Guys who grew up in our backyard like Lynagh showing
up to score twice in the final, guys like Kenningham coming off
the bench in late spring and playing like peak Chris Robshaw.
The core of this side is young. Winning is in their DNA now.
Long may it continue.
God I love this club. It’s good to be back where we belong.

That is true but to be fair, that's only because they were
cheated out of several titles by one clubs financial doping. If
Quins were going to lose to anyone I would have preferred it to
be Exeter for that reason. That and Rob Baxter, who showed his
class yesterday.

There would have been no shame in losing that final to Exeter,
just as there’s no shame in them losing that final to us. Baxter
epitomises what rugby should be about, and I have enormous
respect for him.

Still don't quite believe it. To make sure I'll rewatch the game
today, if I can get the TV back from Paw Patrol that is.

Back at this morning at 07:30hrs
Collected and unloading dense concrete building blocks, then
into the barrow for a 60m run to back of garden.
Baggy head - get that breakfast on woman :)
What a result and to catch up with friends I have not seen for
ages. :)

I’m more amazed by how welcome this win was by the press and
supporters on their respective forums. It’s odd to see the club
be talked about in such positive terms.

Working through a huge bowl of chocolate mint ice cream, as I
heard opera singers use ice cream when they've strained their
throat (probably an urban myth but don't enlighten me!). In the
same way I couldn't wait for the game, I now can't wait for the
full game to become available online so I can watch it all
again!
