Referee for the final and Prem Rugby Preview

Referee: Matthew Carley (107th Premiership game, 1st final).
Assistant Referees: Luke Pearce & Karl Dickson. TMO: Ian
Tempest. Citing Officer: Shaun Gallagher.
Matthew Carley becomes only the 7th different referee to take
charge of the 19 finals so far. This is Exeter Chiefs sixth
successive Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final (only Leicester
have a longer consecutive run with nine in a row) with their two
victories so far being against Wasps in 2017 and 2002. The
Chiefs have won their last eight Premiership Rugby fixtures
since losing 18-34 at Gloucester in Round 15.
Harlequins are only the fourth fourth-placed team to reach the
Gallagher Premiership Final and of those only Saracens in 2015
went on to lift the trophy. The only previous time that
Harlequins reached the Premiership Final was as No 1 seeds in
2012 when they beat Leicester at Twickenham to take the spoils.
Quins only defeat in their last seven appearances at Twickenham
in all competitions was 29-39 to London Irish in the London
Double Header in 2017.
Exeter won both encounters with Harlequins in the regular
season, winning 33-3 at the Stoop in November and by a single
point in a thriller at Sandy Park in March. The two sides have
met just once before at Twickenham with Harlequins running out
victors 22-6 in “The Big Game” on 28 December 2013.

What have either ourselves or Exeter done to deserve Carley?
Would prefer pretty much any of the others. Anyway, it's in the
players' hands to make the ref irrelevant.

What a shame. Really surprised by this. Luke Pearce is a far,
far better referee, as is Wayne Barnes. Carley comes across as
pompous and full of himself, easily offended. Easy to get on the
wrong side of him. Haven't we already had bad experience of him
this season? Does anyone know which Quins matches he's refereed?
Didn't he lose control in one match this season?

Worst referee in the league, arrogant and no engagement with the
players. Can see a few cards and lots of frustration

Oh no, not Carley! I've had a professional work involvement with
him and he is a complete Muppet as a person and in my opinion
not much better as a Ref!
I take it all back Barnsey, come and ref the final..........

I don't have strong feelings about Karl Dickson as a ref, but if
I was a Chiefs fan, that Twitter photo would really wind me up.
While completely the other end of the sporting spectrum, I've
ref'd my son's team (up to U15s). There's a strong tendency to
go the other way, ie be too hard, to be seen not to be biased
towards your 'own' team.
Dickson won the Premiership alongside at least 3 players in our
team (Collier, Care, Marler) so he shouldn't be involved. It
was clearly an important event in his life as it's still his
Twitter photo. Either way, he'll get blamed by both sets of
fans for any marginal decisions and it's an unnecessary
distraction.
Imagine an 81st minute scrum goes down 5 metres from the Chiefs
line. It's 31 - 31. The ref looks across at Dickson for his
input...

I think it was London Irish away when Andre got his 2nd red card
wasn't it ? He acted like a pompous a**e that day which gave
rise to the frustration by both teams. I don't understand
selecting him to referee the showcase final - he's awful and
refuses to engage with the players and is only interested in
asserting his authority.
