This week's Rugby Union Weekly podcast is out with Ugo and
Danny. Well worth a listen!

Danny mentions how the 500 fans made an atmosphere like a
football game. Hopefully we can bring this again at the Big
Stoop.

Don't dwell on that... Focus on the good quotes! My favourites
went something like...
"Part way through the game, about to put the ball into a scrum
opposite the fans, I looked up at them, and suddenly just knew
that we were going to win this game"
"Make no mistake. Without those fans there, we would not have
won that game"
"Those Quins fans - 500 accountants looking like something out
of the Copa de los Libertadores, on their feet singing and
shouting the whole way through"! ;D ;D
So often you hear that sort of thing and think "well they would
be told to say that - it helps the ticket sales", but not on
Saturday... That was a once in a lifetime experience. :)

I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but those quotes ring
true. There's a lot said about the crowd being the 16th man...
but even for matches like the Bath game it comes across as a bit
hyperbolic.
For this match, though, I think it's fully justified. So much
noise, so much singing, never turning to negativity (except for
the occasional loud but polite request that sir look a little
bit more closely at what Bristol were actually doing. Which, if
I am honest, was mostly me) and Quins fans displaying the
dominance in the stands that the scrum delivered on the pitch.
I think we did make a difference. We never gave up on the team,
even at 28-0 down, and in whatever small way we contributed to
the players not just not giving up, but growing in confidence
and control as the game wore on.

There were two of us! It wasn't just me!
The funniest one was about midway through the second half when
Bristol got a boot to a low Quins kick to touch. I called it the
moment it happened and was astonished when the refereeing team
lined up a Bristol throw.
The throw was right next to the big screen, and BT put up a
replay with the ball to foot contact highlighted with a big
yellow circle. Right in front of Barnesy, who was utterly
oblivious to it. But from our viewpoint it was a hilarious if
frustrating justification. I was politely asking sir to look at
the screen in my fervent belief that if I shout loudly enough
the ref can hear me, even if I am watching on television and the
game is in another country, and recorded. But this time I
thought I had a chance...
I didn't, but it didn't matter. I'm pretty sure that was the
lineout that led to the loose pass that led to Baby Chis's try.

It was a good podcast to listen to. I normally listen to it
weekly and the chemistry between Ugo Monye and Danny Care
clearly helps, but Chris Jones is a good presenter and Chris
Ashton provides good insight when he is there.
This week's edition makes it understandable why some rival club
supporters call it Harlequins weekly podcast though!

Yea this week, Quins raised the profile of the Premiership like
it never had before. Not tongue in cheek, had a few people at a
work meeting yesterday on MS Teams that don't watch rugby talk
about it to me cos they knew I support Quins

I guess it may have to wait until he retires, but I'd love to
hear what was going through Barnes' mind whilst he was reffing
that game.
The players, coaches, pundits and almost everyone else will talk
about it endlessly on TV and social media, but the officials are
a bit like the Queen in terms of never speaking out in public,
aren't they.
Was he feeling sorry for us at 28-0 down? The fact that he
sounded rather sad telling our boys that they were coughing up
penalties "chasing things they didn't need to chase" suggests
that maybe he was.
Was he as incredulous as everyone else watching when the
fightback picked up speed? How could he not be, whilst also
having to stay impartial?
