Re: Dave Ewers and Sam Skinner: Exeter Chiefs forwards banned

In the Sale game, there was pushing and shoving by one of their
players to Lawday which to me looked more or less identical to
what Andre did- ie. handbags. Holding shirt, showing arm into
face. It is not a forearm smash or elbow to the face. I suppose
the difference is that, unlike the London Irish player, Lawday
didn't appeal to the tough judge. Once he got the card then
obviously Andre's previous offence, which was deliberate and
merited a red, came into play in terms of ban length
These things are always inconsistent though. No matter how
detailed and well thought out the framework, it still comes down
to the officials on the day and then the citing committee. Some
TMOs are very active at pointing out every single little
incident to the ref and actively looking for reasons to penalise
teams. Others only intervene for clear and obvious foul play or
errors

We can argue over the minutiae of similar offences but one thing
is very clear - if you deliberately hit a player in the face or
head with any part of your body you will almost certainly be red
carded and banned. There is no need and no excuse to do it, and
the card and bans are the players' own fault.

He didn't hit Lawday in the face, which is quite an important
difference. It was still dirty and deserved a card, but it
wasn't a hard forearm direct to the jaw like Andre's.
People are going to have at accept that deliberately striking
someone in the face is going to get looked at very differently
to a poor tackle.

I take your point. Absolutely no defence for Andre on the Lloyd
Evans incident, but I think it’s somewhat of an exaggeration to
describe the Rona one as a ‘hard forearm to the jaw’.
He deserved a red for stupidity given that it was totally
unnecessary. My point is simply that when you look at that
incident compared to a lot of other high tackles that have only
received a yellow, the level of danger isn’t even remotely the
same. One of the softest reds I’ve ever seen.

This citing and suspension doesn't reflect well on Kark
Dickson's refereeing of the incident.

I agree - and Rona said that it didn't make contact with his
head (which the panel dismissed). Then a game or two later we
have Genge smashing his arm into Kenningham's head with force,
which gets dismissed by the ref as "brushing his face" until the
TMO corrects him, and then gets mitigated to a yellow because he
goes on to wrap and doesn't get picked up by a citing panel.
Or O'Flaherty tipping Parton over in the air, landing with
forehead and knees simultaneously striking the ground, which was
a yellow and also not cited.
One of these was a bit silly but not actually dangerous. Two of
them were highly dangerous.
I'm very supportive of the move to reduce head contact, and the
protocol is directionally correct but the aggravating and
mitigating factors are a bit too simplistic. I'd have no real
complaint with Andre's red and ban (and Mike's) if incidents
like Genge's and O'Flaherty's had received similar bans.
I'd like to see some consideration of what the eventual force
was, regardless of mitigation, and whether the player had the
option to do something else.
Andre - no real risk of injury, but totally voluntary action:
red and ban
Genge - significant risk of injury, no need to lead with an
elbow that high - should be red and ban
O'Flaherty - aerial contact with no real chance of winning the
ball - should be red and ban
Brown - risk of injury because of where it was though the level
of force was low, but I'd have liked to see some exploration of
whether he had any other option if he was trying to stand up -
was a red, but a fair result would have been a much shorter ban.

Rona lied, chaps. The video evidence directly contradicted him
and so the panel disregarded his comments. It is painfully
obvious he hit Rona flush in the jaw.
Genge hit Kenningham on the top of the head with his right arm
while performing a cleanout with his body and his wrapped left
arm. Could've been either card but again, removing the context
makes it sound very different.
Until the fans accept that thuggery is going to be punished
extra hard then you'll keep getting upset, I guess.

I think Rona was silly to say that. It was very obvious that he
was hit in the face. Unless maybe he doesn't think the face is
part of the head. Didn't Leo Cullen once say at a hearing that
Quinlan didn't eye gouge him when everyone saw a close-up slow
motion replay of Quinlan gouging him?

Going off topic, Exeter confirmed that Ewers was going to be
called up to the England side this summer. Shame as I really
like him.
Would love to see a back row of Ewers, Simmonds and Curry in the
future

Perhaps Rona was embarrassed that his reaction is basically what
resulted in the red?
I’m not excusing Andre’s actions. It was completely stupid, but
I’m still struggling with this revisionist view of it being some
kind of forceful smash. Andre is a very powerful, big man. Had
he really hit with the force that’s being suggested, Rona would
have been on the deck and not dramatically making a meal of a
low impact.
Ultimately, he needs to have a word with himself. His two reds
have come from deliberate acts of foul play (the first one was
way worse IMO). I don’t want to see that from him or anyone
else, I just can’t get on board with the Rona offence being
described as a vicious assault when it really wasn’t.
