Yes, but he also has form for rethinking his 1st XV when they
lose (or nearly lose) the first test and bringing new faces in.

Does he? He made very few changes after the 1st Test walloping
by the ABs - Sexton was fully fit again so Farrell moved to 12,
Kruis dropped for Itoje, Warburton was fit again so POM was
       dropped to accommodate him.
That's the same Farrell who was pretty awful in all 3 Tests btw
       :(

Maybe not rethinking then, but that’s still 3 pretty significant
changes. And the Lions were on track to get thumped again until
SBW’s red card. It was only by the third test that some of the
players who’d been coming back from injury were up to speed
enough to match the ABs in intensity.

I mean it's two changes that were inevitable given full fitness
       - it's not "rethinking his 1st XV" is it? :)

He didn’t have to make the changes and yet he replaced his
captain, lineout leader (I think) and 10. Possibly also the
defensive lead if that was Te’o.
That’s three or four pretty pivotal roles.

C'mon man - he brought in the tour captain once he regained
fitness and replaced like-for-like in the second row, and
shifted Farrell across one to accommodate the fit again Sexton.
You're really reaching here - that's not a huge number of
changes and it doesn't come across as "rethinking his 1st XV" at
       all.
If 2/3 of the changes would've happened regardless, it's hardly
       a rethink!
The problem is you can pretty much guess about 12-13 of his Test
side before they even play a game.

Agree to disagree but I wouldn’t call Itoje and Kruis like for
like players other than the fact they’re both second rows.
There was no need to accommodate Farrell and Sexton. Especially
if keeping Farrell is at the expense of the defensive lead and
Farrell had been so bad in the first test.
Plus he dropped POM from skipper to out of the 23. Pretty big
       call.
To your last point, how many of us didn’t have Sinckler in our
guesses of the tour party? Or had Johnny Hill in there?
I don’t think many guesses at the first Test XV will be as close
       as you think.

Actually, agree on the kruis comment - for some reason I thought
AWJ came in for him, my bad. It's still the only essentially
       unforced change.
Farrell is England's defence leader. Te'o was nothing more than
an impact sub for England. The impact of losing Te'o as
defensive leader (if that's what he was and not Farrell) is
       being massively overstated there.
POM was playing in a position covered by multiple people on the
pitch for the second test. He was never a good option for the
bench. Though I think he was a poor option to start anyway.
When I say Gatland's test team can be predicted early on I am
not saying before we know who he's called up, that's a bit
       silly!

My point was that there have already been some/several/a number
of (delete as applicable) unforeseen selections for this tour
which make it hard(er) to know what the starting XV is likely to
       be.
But if you think anyone can already get 12-13 right, feel free
       to have a go.
