I am now starting to wonder if Taylor had a hand tangled in
Mike’s bootlaces or something, because from the rear angle you
can see that his foot comes down almost across the other leg.
And from the front, he clearly tries to stand up, fails, tries
again, ends up with his foot on the face and then falls over.
Barnes’s statement that “he wasn’t off balance” seems to be
ignoring everything except the actual moment of contact - prior
to that he’s clearly off balance, after it he’s clearly off
balance and it’s only in the moment of trying to stand up that
he looks reasonably stable - but then goes over so quickly that
I think there must have been something else acting on him that
the camera didn’t pick up.
The citing panel hasn’t exactly been open to mitigating
arguments recently, though.

Had to be a red because it's head and if given a yellow he'd
have had red anyway because he'd already been binned. I think he
knew the player was there but I also think that's why you have
the foot movement I think he's trying to move his foot away from
where he thinks the players arms etc are. never able to prove it

to now playing for Quins and whilst passionate, I have never
seen him deliberately go out to hurt anyone like that and he's
had plenty of red mist moments to have tested him. Got to plead
guilty with circumstances, guilty because head contact was made,
circumstances are was unstable and trying to place foot away
from where he thought the player was, no stamping motion just
foot placement, plead not guilty and it's the long ban.

The angle from the back and the slo-mo replay look bad. The
longer range, real time angle from the front don't look that
bad.
How he pleads will presumably depend a lot of the wording of the
charge. If he is charged with deliberately stamping on his head,
I'd hope he'd plead not guilty. If he's charged with reckless
but unintentional contact with the head, then he probably ought
to please guilty.
There does seem to be a presumption of guilt in these cases. It
doesn't seem right to me that you are encouraged to plead guilty
to accept a lower punishment, even if you disagree with it. I
guess the problem is that the charge will be worded a certain
way, and you presumably have to plead guilty or not-guilty,
rather than responding with "I disagree with the charge as
worded but accept that I did x".
It certainly isn't a stamp, isn't thuggery and isn't the worst
thing anyone's ever seen on a rugby pitch. It's a tread. Dave
Ward was accused of similar. The usual hysterical comments on
here and Twitter. Welsh fans getting stuck in.
I think it would be very generous to say he was just off balance
and completely accidental. Looks to me that he was a bit off
balance and thought he might just tread on Taylor but then got
his face by mistake. Niggle gone wrong. So reckless but not
intentional, and a tread not a stamp. As soon as he realised he
got his face he acted to take the pressure off.
Deserved red, but should be a low end ban imo

I thought you just got charged with an offence. Intention,
recklessness etc. is for the hearing to establish. I may well be
wrong.

That's the theory. In practice the panel seems a bit capricious
- e.g. Andre copping a long ban for what was a pretty minor
incident and the panel disregarding Rona's testimony out of
hand.

Looking at the infographics the RFU now puts out, it’s really
hard to tell what sort of ban Brown may get.
Head contact is a minimum of mid-range and the other factors
considered are:
Reckless
Intentional
Player injured (Taylor was bandaged)
Player vulnerability
If these elements are included in the charge the Brown could
plead guilty.
The mitigating factors are:
Guilty plea
Good conduct
Remorse
Good conduct
Anything else
If Brown please guilty and shows how many puppies he’s rescued
recently he should tick all of those boxes.
I’d guess he may only get 3 weeks

Taylor was bandaged but given no HIA and there was no visible
abrasion at all when the bandage was off I think trying to
suggest he was injured would be a stretch

The wide angle view makes the boot incident look a little less
serious, but it also makes it look like he drops his knee on
Taylor in the build up. It's the knee drop that he's getting up
from when the boot incident happens.

I suspect Rona's testimony was disregarded because if they
allowed it they'd have had to charge him with bringing the game
into disrepute for indicating to the AR that he'd received face
contact.
