Plans for the return of fans to sport have received a
double-boost after it emerged away supporters would be allowed
to attend Premier League matches before the end of the season
and Twickenham was awarded the Heineken Champions Cup and
Challenge Cup finals.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has written to
the competition’s 20 clubs saying the Government plans to permit
up to 500 away fans at football fixtures and other sporting
events when crowds of up to 10,000 return on May 17.
The Rugby Football Union, meanwhile, has announced up to 10,000
spectators would be able to buy tickets for each of European
club rugby’s finals on May 22 and May 21, respectively, after
the games were moved from Marseille.
Both developments emerged after the Telegraph revealed that
Boris Johnson would be told next week that social distancing for
large events could be scrapped from June 21, with initial
results from crowd pilots having found no spike in coronavirus
cases among attendees.
Masters asked all Premier League clubs to provide feedback on
the away fans proposal, which would mean denying some of their
own supporters the chance to attend, as well as a £30 cap on
away ticket prices.
He wrote: “Government has informed us that, as Covid-19
indicators continue to improve, it is planning to relax the ‘no
away fans’ stipulation from the Stage Five Guidance, governing
the playing of our final match rounds in season 2020-21.
“The return of fans and ultimately full stadiums remains our
primary goal, therefore our view is that we must accept the
opportunity to host as wide a range of supporters as possible.
“That being the case, the Executive proposes an away ticket
allocation of 5 per cent of available capacity (a maximum of 500
away fans) at round 37 and 38 matches, respecting the £30 away
ticket price cap.”
Local Safety Advisory Groups (SAGs) must grant permission for
the matches to take place.
“This policy is designed to accommodate away supporters,
maximise home fan numbers and reduce the likelihood of SAG
resistance,” Masters wrote.
“This brings away fans in line with government’s planned
‘opening up’ of wider society, including travel, from May 17. On
this basis, each sport would have the discretion to allow away
supporters to attend events should it wish to.
“[We] have spoken to several clubs already about their views of
this decision as well as the impact it may have on travel plans,
broadcast scheduling and SAG/local authority permissions.
Clearly this is a change from the previous government advice
upon which we moved match rounds 36 and 37 to allow each club to
host a fixture with home supporters and those clubs who have
worked hard to secure early kick-off times to satisfy broadcast
commitments.”
The RFU said that Twickenham’s hosting of the two European
finals – tickets for which were to be put on sale from 5pm on
Friday – was subject to licences being granted by the London
Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames.
RFU chief executive and EPCR board member, Bill Sweeney, said:
“We’re looking forward to seeing up to 10,000 fans back at
Twickenham Stadium again for these EPCR finals and are delighted
to be chosen to host the fixtures. This is an important
opportunity for us to hold events as part of plans for the
return of fans to stadia. We are working hard with EPCR and
local authorities to put various measures in place to ensure the
safety and well-being of all those attending each match.”

Aren't the spectators supposed to be wearing masks?

Tickets are on general sale via England Rugby,
Just picked up a couple for the challenge final....
I really need to watch a game again, I'm not a Quins season
ticket holder, so this is my only way atm to see a game.
I'll be there a neutral, but I genuinely can't wait.

Packed house at the indoor snooker world championship final but
pretty severe restrictions to outdoor rugby matches, doesn`t
make a lot of sense.
