illegal IPTV. Completely agree with that, but... isn't Now TV
part of Sky? They're just getting the subscribers who'd
otherwise not be able to afford full fat Sky or can't install a
dish.

From what I understand, NowTV doesn't actually lead to that many
people taking out new long term (1year+) subscriptions. That's
basically plateaued. Now TV users tend to buy passes just for
what they want to watch, be it a day pass so they can catch a
specific game, week pass to allow them to binge through Game of
Thrones, etc. BT are more flexible in that they allow you to
change your subscription package monthly, so you can have Sky
Sports added on over the summer to catch a Lions tour without
having to subscribe for the whole year.
A lot of folks think that this will evolve over time to be a
system where you pick & choose what channels you get (instead of
packages) or even "pay-per-show/episode" systems. Personally I
doubt that. When you look at the economics the consumer would
end up with much higher expenditure for far less content. The
costs of TV production even on a relatively small TV drama are
far larger that you'd think, let alone those for live sports
broadcasting or large TV blockbuster like The Crown. Sports is a
little easier to guess what the potential audience is in terms
of numbers & demographics that can be "packaged" to advertisers
to fill spots for, and while Rugby may have better demographics
in terms of ABC1 viewers, drawing higher value advertisers &
sponsors, the number of viewers is still going to be relatively
small & so the revenue that a standalone Rugby channel could
demand from advertisers & sponsors will be quite a bit lower
than what a sports network that offers bleedthrough from other
sports with larger markets can demand.

Appreciate that. That’s why I don’t think that BT will have “the
economy of scale [for] equipment, crew, infrastructure”. They
don’t seem to have *any* equipment, crew or infrastructure.

According to one paper this morning BT sports only has 2 million
subscribers. They are asking me currently to sign up for 2 years
which I don’t want to do so my sub is up mid June so we will see
what happens.

BT have been asking me to sign-up to new two-year deals of one
sort or another for about eighteen months (when I signed my
current two-year deal) on an almost weekly basis. Every deal is
apparently just for me and what I have been waiting for.
I remain as impressed with BT's rugby coverage as I am
unimpressed by just about every other single facet of their
business.

Do you know if there's any stats on whether NowTV has
cannibalised Sky's own user base, or whether it's just broadened
their reach? Not being able to get a dish installed is a real
issue for some people (and Sky's exorbitant fees are beyond the
reach of many more)

I wouldn't say sky is exorbitant, I had free installation and
pay £22 a month for my entertainment package in HD and get
discounted Netflix as well.
£22 isn't even a decent bottle of Scotch these days!

But another £20 odd for sports makes it £42+ doesn’t it?

Yes, but in comparison to how much a match ticket is for a
single have you get far more over 30 days for less money.
I pay £35 a month for BT sport via Sky at the moment, that's the
same price as one match ticket to Quins.
Sky/BT do charge what seems to be a lot but compared to the
amount the club's charge for tickets it's good value.

I pay £28/mth for Superfast fibre broadband and Entertainment &
Sport HD TV with BT which is a great deal.
Unfortunately it's so good that every time they raise their
prices I have to raise a complaint with the CEO's office
providing all my paperwork to show that this price was
guaranteed when I took out my contract eighteen months ago to
prevent them increasing my price.

Content is the key here. If you have a strong brand and people
wanting to see your product, people will pay be that sponsors,
media companies or supporters. Is Premiership rugby at that
level? Definitely not at the moment.
Do PRL really understand the potential reach of the viewing
base. Absolute no because each club has it's own ways of
tracking it and no one subscribes to PRLs social media feeds to
get Harlequins updates.
They need to start investing in people with experience in this
field as ultimately sport will go that way. The recent ESL
fiasco in wendyball has shown that and you feel that in places
like France & Ireland this kind of model is easier to achieve
than in England. As stated above, not easy and PRL don't
currently have a wealth of camera men to move around the country
but until they start looking at these things, we fall further
behind as a sport.
Maybe start with a radio station that covers Rugby the way
wendyball is covered and grow from there, see how many people
are interested with some decent shows and presenters and a match
day service ona Saturday/Sunday. Imagine the post match phone
ins????
