BT confirms 'early discussions' over future of BT Sport

Let me get this right. BT think they may lose out when there is
an actual breakaway football ESL to which they won't have the
exclusive rights.
So, lets sell this pup on quick!

BT's foray into Sports was in part to counter Sky who at the
time were by far the dominant Sports broadcaster in the UK while
also beginning to make a dent into the Broadband business that
BT rely on. Things have changed over the last 10 years, though.
Sky aren't anywhere near as dominant as they were then due to
IPTV taking off (IPTV is Internet Protocol TV).

Oh god, the thought of having to go back to Stuart Barnes every
week!!!
Why don't PRL set up their own streaming service as they own the
content and could create apps for Smart TV, laptops/PCs and
mobile devices. I'm sure CVC would be happy to help fund that
and take a share of the profits? I know it's not simple but
would give them a better income stream.

I know IPTV is not a totally niche thing now but is it really
anything more than a rounding error compared to Sky (and BT's)
income from subscribers?

I think the issue with that would be cost. At the moment BT &
Sky get the economy of scale that having equipment, crew,
infrastructure to cover multiple sports. You'd need to replicate
that all for a single sport, making it a lot more expensive, if
you want to have the same quality in terms of picture, audio,
etc.

For Sky, definitely. NowTV is IPTV, and it's a significant part
of Sky's revenues. As for BT, it's the core to the BT TV
platform. If like me you get BT Sport on a BT TV box, you're
betting it via IPTV. Also, think back 10 years. Netflix, Amazon
Prime, heck, even BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4 etc were very niche
players if they even existed, needing people to go through a
number of hoops to be able to watch on the main living room TV.
Now TVs come with the apps baked in so you can do it all from an
onscreen menu that includes all the services you could ask for.

I don’t know how much BT actually make. The rugby output seems
to be made by Sunset+Vine and i think they also do C5

Setting up a 'Premiership TV' wouldn't be that hard technically.
The problem is that without a big network around it to promote
the Prem/European cups to a wider audience, and all of the back
office costs without the advertising deals that pay for it all,
the Prem would be looking at a big cut in TV revenues for a good
few years while they built it up. Huge gamble for CVC. Can't see
it happening in these cash-strapped times.

Ah, gotcha. For some reason I thought you were talking about
illegal IPTV. Completely agree with that, but... isn't Now TV
part of Sky? They're just getting the subscribers who'd
otherwise not be able to afford full fat Sky or can't install a
dish.

Sunset+Vine produce the shows, but it's commissioned by BT
Sport, who own the broadcasting rights to the games. It's the
rights and subscriber base that has value.
