There's some guesswork here. They have no idea how much of the
head movement was Rona's instincts kicking in.

If you hit someone in the face and their head jerks back, I
think it's reasonable to assume the hitting in the face is what
caused it. It's a sports disciplinary hearing, not a criminal
trial.

I think that there is an arguement that this decision is
bringing the game into disrepute. No common sense applied as
far as I can see to the decision making process. You have to
ask yourselves - is this sort of panel convening over what was
clearly a minor scuffle good for the image of the game?

don't know about you but if I see a for arm moving towards my
face, I move my face back to lessen the impact. Should have
plead guilty apologised with mitigation it wasn't elbow and not
intentional. oh well now we will see how much of an influence AE
is on the teams performance.

I think the panel would've laughed off the idea it wasn't
intentional.
I'm not sure why people are so surprised by this: Andre
deliberately smacked Rona in the jaw with his forearm. That's
what the video shows, that's what the ref thought, that's what
the panel thought too. You might "move your face back" but if
someone at close range suddenly jams a forearm in your face,
you're not going to have much time to react.
Andre needs to stop hitting people in the face.

Surely the best placed person to know whether he smacked Curtis
Rona in the jaw with his forearm, deliberately or otherwise, is
Curtis Rona?
Given that Rona submitted that Andre made contact with his body,
not his head and was willing to testify to that effect to the
panel but the panel chose not to allow him to do so, surely
there has to be significant grounds for an appeal?
It's not 100% clear from the video whether or not he actually
made contact, so if the other player willingly says that he
didn't, why wouldn't the disciplinary panel let him testify? I
have no problem at all with significant sanctions for even the
lightest contact to the head given the need to act on potential
brain damage, but having a kangaroo court railroad through a
decision without taking in all the evidence just because it
looked like he might've made contact and they maybe don't want
to undermine the ref's decision is taking it too far!!!

Have to agree with Jammy and others here. The response should
have been 'sorry Mr Beak, I just reacted and didn't intend to
strike my opponent, regardless of provocation. Would you like
you cars washed?'
4/5 weeks ban. Still frustrating but would have helped.

It IS 100% clear from the video. And from Rona's own reaction at
the time. It's nice of him to try and get the ban reduced - he
probably didn't think it was worth a red card - but he's not the
first player to try and make out something didn't happen after
the fact and he won't be the last. Leo Cullen springs to mind.

That may be fair enough when you're talking about amateur rugby
with the judgement having a pretty negligible impact on the
player's wider life.
It's a rather different matter when the judgement can have a
potentially huge impact on the player's livelihood, for example
through losing out on potential win bonuses, sponsorship deals
and the like. They also have to make sure that they fully
adhere with employment law when passing judgement on a
professional player.
