I love how every player does what exactly what is needed of them
from 1-15
Marler- Solid in scrum. Huge tackles. Cut the cynical penalties
from previous seasons
Baldwin- Hits his darts. Tackle machine, shame to see him go
Louw- Scrum machine and has less of an attitude than Sinckler
Symons- Absolute grafter and instrumental to our great lineout
Lewies- Superb leader. Got a great engine on him
Chisholm- Playing great rugby particularly great at getting his
hands free in tackles
Evans- Don’t need to say much... jackal machine
Dombrandt- The perfect no. 8 for our style of play. He makes
line breaks look easy
Care- Playing his best rugby for us arguably ever. Contributes
to our rapid ruck speed
Smith- Developed game management immensely. The catalyst for
everything good
Murley- A strong Jack Nowell- esque with serious gas
Esterhuizen- Gain-line monster provides a threat that enables
our back line to fire
Marchant/ Northmore- Both great. Northmore more offensive
Marchant more defensive
Green/Lynagh- Jonny May type speed. Players found at the right
place and right time
Brown- Best form in years. Solid under the high ball, gained
pace, and great offloads

I agree with BPQ, but I'd add that one of the things I have
loved in 2021 is how much so many of our players have improved
since January.
The first XV are all playing well - with genuine competition for
places on the wings and in the centre - but we're also seeing a
whole load of squad players starting to pick up their
performances:
- Lamb has been impressively disruptive of opposition lineouts
- Tizard just looks like a senior player
- Lawday has shown himself to be a decent alternative to
Chisholm
- Kenningham is still tuning his jackalling radar, but he shows
huge potential. He carried well against Ulster, too, which
suggests to me that he could become a very effective 6, perhaps
given a couple of year to fill out
- Lynagh is a promising enough prospect that I can understand
why the club didn't fight harder to keep Ibitoye
- I know we expected good things of Louw, but it's been great
how quickly he's settled into the role and how much he adds in
his all round game. He doesn't offer as much in attack as Sinck,
but his defence, rucking and scrummaging are more consistent.
He's a good complement to Marler.
But if I had to pick one thing, I think it would be Marler
staying with the club rather than playing in the 6 Nations. He's
at the top of his game at the moment and I particularly enjoy
the "oh shit" look on the faces of attackers who unexpectedly
find themselves his channel

I would argue the merits of each individual in our first team
being the best player in his position in the league (I think I
would win most of those arguments and wouldn't back down on
anyone!)
However, what has pleased me most is the excellent combinations.
Our front row is the best in the league. Our usual back row
(with Chis minor) is perfect. Danny and Marcus have found the
perfect level of trust and communication, and Andre and Marchant
are a beautiful marriage in midfield!

Cheers poorfour I didn’t have the energy to extend it to the
wider squad but 100% agree! You could even extend it further
beyond academy to the younger ages with players such as Cassius
cleaves being an exciting at 18 yo.
I guess the question is what positions are we weakest in? I’d
say second choice 10 is something we desperately need

Beginning to play like a real team that plays for each other.
Work to do - yes: keep learning.
What to work towards - play for the full 80 and mentally toughen
up.
Don't leave stuff on the pitch.

I agree with everything so far but for me the two stand-out
elements are; the fun they all seem to be having and the
constant joy of Joe Marler's perfect tackling technique.

that these talented individuals are playing in combinations that
are working really well.

Regardless of that, I think we can make a case that at 1, 3, 7,
8, 9, 10, 12, 13 (x2) and 15 we have players who are as good as
anyone in the league on form. The stats bear that out,
especially in our scrum and for Evans, Care, Smith and Brown.
Simmonds has better numbers than Dombrandt but is in a different
sort of team doing a different sort of role.
Our wings are pretty good, but there are lots of other good
wings. Our second row are competent but not exceptional.
Where the team has yet to mature are in the quality of backups -
for instance, Exeter are more consistently able to rotate
players - and the consistency of defence. Both of those I think
could and should improve over the next season or so.
