If anyone still buys TRP, Pete Jackson ranting that Quins have
disrespected European competition and looks like he is
suggesting we should be banned

Should Sale been banned for letting in 45 points in a semi
final? Can’t of been the best team for the job if that happens.
And should Leinster be banned from pro14 as they don’t even play
their first team in the final?

TRP continues its descent into tabloid style nonsense. Really
disappointing as I used to read it most weekends about a decade
ago.
Why does all the holier than thou stuff about team selection in
Europe always seem to emanate from the Emerald Isle? What is it
about Irish rugby that’s so sensitive about it?

Irish rugby does an incredible line in sanctimony, it's true.
But I suppose you do have to bear in mind that for decades
English rugby bleated about a level playing field in Europe
(mostly inaccurately) with regards to salary caps and relegation
and being able to rest players for big matches. The European
rugby landscape was altered largely because of that. So I can
see how an English club that's flying high in the Premiership
deciding not to compete would rankle.
It still does not excuse for a moment the level of bile in that
ridiculous article, though. I suppose it's worth noting that the
author is a bitter old man.

I remember the endless back and forth around the restructuring
of the competition a few years back. Always thought it was one
of those questions to which there was no answer that would
really satisfy both sides of the discussion given the markedly
different situations in England/France and the Pro 14.
I didn’t agree with the daft side we put out against Ulster at
all. Way too weak and I don’t think it did many of the players
involved any favours but in this truncated season with tight
schedules and all that’s going on in the background I think
there should be a little bit more leeway given to clubs managing
their squads. Totally agree, the level of bile is nuts.

Those discussions are also somewhat tainted in hindsight (and,
frankly, plenty of people were pointing it out at the time)
given that the people leading the charge for PRL were... the
Saracens and Bath mob, with their very dubious approach to the
salary cap!

Quite so! The legal tax breaks on the Irish side always feel
like a kind of market distortion too but each league/country is
free to run its own affairs accordingly I guess. I remember
thinking at the time as a semi outsider to it that both sides of
the argument were doing their level best to dress up naked self
interest as altruism. That era was when I stopped looking at
Planet Rugby and 606 forums!

Ridiculous comment. If you think the team we put out was bad,
have a look at Exeter’s team against Gloucester two weeks ago.
In this season, without prem cup/ A team fixtures, the game
against Ulster was an opportunity to play fringe players in the
squad who could contribute to the XV later on this season.
