Brown could have made his announcement through a polished club
press release but he wants to do it on his own terms. Some
people struggle with Brown’s blunt and honest assessments. Some
of his employers will be reading this looking through their
       fingers.
He wants to acknowledge the good times, the fans, the coaches
and the team-mates who have become his extended family. But he
also wants to set the record straight.
‘I wanted to stay at Quins,’ says Brown, with emphasis, before
he moves on to anything else. ‘I was completely open with the
club. I always wanted to stay and I wanted to finish my career
at Quins. I love this club. I will always love this club,
irrespective of how things have ended.’
In a few months, Brown and his young family will move 300 miles
north to Newcastle. His wife, Eliza, has already signed up with
the north-east estate agents and former Quins No 8 Nick Easter,
who is now defence coach at Newcastle, has also offered a
helping hand to find the best areas to rent.
‘At this stage of my career and life, it makes no sense to move
but I was left with no other option,’ says Brown. ‘I chased the
club for weeks about a new contract and, when they finally
brought me in for a meeting, it lasted four minutes.
Paul Gustard told me I had no future here and I was staring down
the barrel of unemployment. I’m 35, with a family to support and
I’ve been with Harlequins since I was 18. There was no, “Thanks
for your efforts, we’ll help you with your future”.
‘It was one of the worst feelings of my life. I couldn’t get my
head around it. It wasn’t like my legs have gone and I can’t get
in the team any more. Earlier that week, Gussy had done an
interview on the Rugby Pass website saying he wanted to reduce
the age of the team. A few days later, I was gone. I never
thought it would end that way.’

The final impacts of Gustard’s reign is being. We are losing a
huge amount of experience and quality with brown and Baldwin
moving on. I’m devastated the club has let our biggest legend
       down like this.

No wonder Club pushed through whole of refunds/credits earlier
than expected. aAssuming this is true what a way to treat a
player. It maybe Gussies way but it is not Quins way. Laurie
       Dalrymple statement required.

This is a really sad end and doesn't put the club in a great
light. I get that business and pragmatic decision-making need to
lead in certain situations but this feels cruel. Especially to a
one-club man who is/was playing so well.

I find this situation really poor from Quins. I cannot believe
the guy has been treated with that level of respect. Very
       disappointed.

Not commented on the board for a long time as I now live a long
way away from the Stoop. This is appalling behaviour by the
       club.

Didn’t think I’d ever feel more let down by the club than
Bloodgate but here we are. A meeting that doesn’t even last 1
       second per appearance.

At this point, it might not have been better to take Dean
Richards to the Harlequins and keep MB .....

I feel we are owed an explanation from the powers that be here.
If the scenario played out as the Mail reports it, it is plainly
       unacceptable.
