Not exactly a blind guess, was it. The entirely predictable
outcome of picking a rank 2nd/3rd XV against a good European
team.

Not sure that's fair. While a loss was definitely a
possibility, I didn't guess that there would be no commitment to
the set piece across almost the whole game. I didn't guess that
the forwards would go missing throughout the game. I didn't
guess that we would not commit to defend a rolling maul five
metres out - repeatedly. I didn't guess that we would have no
kicking game.

Come on. Not doing things right is what happens when you pick a
side that has no experience playing with each other and throw
them in against a good team. That was part of the complaint
about changing the entire team! They don't play like a team!

I don't buy that. These were disastrous over-arching tactical
decisions, not mistakes. Repeatedly being under-committed on
rucks and rolling mauls was not the absent players making a
mistake, it was planned. Where you're right is the failure to
adapt when the game plan wasn't working.

Those mistakes come from a lack of cohesion, a lack of
communication, and a lack of experience. It's all related.
(Also no team commits every forward to the maul defence, that's
an easy way to just concede a try down the side)

Eh? No cheap shot intended. It's just a response to the
complaint that we stood off a bit. Defending a maul is fairly
complicated. It's also very hard when you've got a bunch of kids
and second stringers. Power and technique and cohesion and
leadership all matter.

That's fair but, for me, we routinely had three, maybe four,
players in the ruck maximum (not always forwards) and we clearly
didn't have a second pod of forwards standing off for next phase
play. The rest of the forwards were far from the action, and of
uncertain purpose for the next phase. For me, that's gameplan.
I don't understand what the thinking was for that, and I don't
think that a pod worth of forwards simply decided to be
somewhere else.
(I know that there are other tactical options than pods - but
I'd like to now what the plan with the forwards actually was)

That makes sense. And I do think that's just related to the
dangers of throwing in a different group of players with no
clear leader, a lack of experience, and a severe lack of game
time.
