Agree - blows to throat area are potentially lethal eg
Catrakellis - a horrible moment live.

I'm pretty sure it hit his upper shoulder first and then slid up
or that one part hit his shoulder and another his throat at the
same time, but it was high enough that it was bound to be a
problem - on balance a red, but my point was mainly that it was
the TMO's call that there was no mitigation, not Barnes -
perhaps I should have stressed that. I expected a red bearing in
mind how these things are presently interpreted and policed.

Bit sad I know but I had another look. Your second
interpretation looks right - elbow to shoulder at the same time
as forearm to throat.
But the call was made by Barnes and frankly there was no
mitigation anyway. Barnes just confirmed his view with the TMO.
To be honest, I think the ref trump's the TMO although I could
be wrong.
And he just got a 6 week ban, reduced to 3 for the usual
reasons. If Barnes had given him a yellow it would have been a
clear error.
