Jones’ status as rugby’s highest-paid coach will not prevent the
cash-strapped RFU from parting ways with the Australian, as
Telegraph Sport can reveal that a clause exists in his current
deal that could see him axed following their sudden loss of
form. Insiders have indicated that it would not involve an
expensive pay-off because of the terms of the agreement, despite
his lucrative salary that is in excess of £550,000 per year
following his post-Covid pay cut.

The cash strapped RFU was wise enough to put a clause in his
last contract that means they can dump him with no pay out!
England players to be asked if Eddie Jones should stay on

but for a bunch of those players a vote to drop Eddie will be a
vote to stop playing for England. They'll surely stick with the
devil they know.

Baxter's contract running in parallel to Jones' is no great
revelation. Baxter saying he doesn't want the job before then
puts the RFU on notice that he is not their man if they get rid
of Jones now. And they would need to make a knee jerk reaction
in finding a new coach from a standing start.
Not that Baxter is the only man in the running, but suspect if
he was happy to take the role on now Jones would be off.

Re Baxter. People moan about EJs style etc, Baxter and Exeter
have had a fair bit of grief for being "boring". Yes they win
stuff, but they are not the most attractive (and Jones has won
stuff in the past and been labelled boring)

I think the difference is Exeter still want to play rugby.
They're direct, and sometimes repetitive, but they keep the ball
in hand, give plenty of time and space to their creative
players, and play to their strengths.
England under Eddie have an obvious gameplan to kick away
possession the vast majority of the time, particularly away from
home. At half time against Ireland, we'd kicked the ball 14
times and run it 33 metres. It's a vortex of anti-rugby. At
least Exeter want the chance to do something with the ball.

Exeter do, at times, play a rather functional style, but I
rarely see Maunder, Joe Simmonds etc hoofing the leather off it
as much as Youngs, Ford, Fazlet have been recently.
I can't see Baxter going for it myself. Could be wrong but I
think he enjoys the niche he has down at Exeter and they're
hardly likely to get rid of him any time soon either. Big
difference from the daily job of a DOR to being England coach.

I would not want Baxter to take on the role before he’s had at
least some level of experience as an international coach. In the
professional era, very few coaches have been successful at the
RWC at the first attempt (though for some reason SA coaches seem
to be the exception... and even Jake White had Eddie as a
consultant) - it’s a unique event and I think you need to have
experienced the full cycle to be ready to lead a side through
it.
I would want him, or anyone coming into the role, to have been
there and done it either as an assistant or as coach of a
smaller international side before being handed England job.
Either that, or we commit to having someone for two RWC cycles
and accept that the first one may be disappointing.

Sorry, not sure what point you are making, I simply pointed out
that it would appear that there does appear to be a mechanism to
move Jones on without paying out a lot of money.

I have a feeling the RFU will stick with Eddie. EJ is a good
talker and as they say bullish!t baffles brains.
I’d like to think IF he did stay on, the RFU would take note
that currently it seems like EJ does not have much support
currently with the supporters so would need to address this with
wholesale changes to coaxing set up and players.
