Don't think this can be settled until the end of the season, we
don't yet know how good we are, yes agreed we are playing a
better style and its fun to watch, BUT until teams are back to
relatively full strength we don't know if we are that good. It
might be we go backwards and the calls for a DoR are loud, it
might be win win the Premiership and the calls are why change.
Still to early to decide in my opinion.

Yes, I know this is an article for people to replace RoboEddie,
but presumably some of these people (especially the misses)
might be open to an offer from Harlequins... It at least gives
an idea of some of the current runners and riders

Out of that list I'd only want Robertson, Cheika or Joseph for
Quins. The others aren't suited to our unstructured attacking
game.
I've left O'Shea off as can't see him coming back.

One option would be not to have a full time DoR at all, but to
find a very experienced coach who could act as a mentor to the
the current triumvirate on a part time basis. That appeals to me
as it means you have a big rugby brain with a bit of distance
who can point out where things could be improved and would
develop the setup we have today. It's also quite similar to the
role that Brendan Venter moved into at Saracens - and cheating
aside it was a successful model.
I could see that being compatible with the roles that several of
the candidates listed there are doing, especially given that
Millard is handling the operational side of the role. It would
rule out the likes of Mitchell, Borthwick, Baxter and probably
COS - but it might work for Schmidt, Gatland, Cheika or Joseph.

Interesting Poorfour, and I be wouldn't be against it,
particularly if the club see a DoR in the making amongst our
current coaches (Flannery?). A mentor set up could bridge the
gap nicely.

I think Poorfour's idea is an interesting and potentially good
one, the major downside being that there would be a good chance
that any other position sought by that coach may require
exclusivity.

Can you see one of those you think might want to consider it -
Schmidt, Gatland, Cheika or Joseph - wanting to move to London
and work part time? Schmidt wanted to spend more time at home,
after all. But it might be something Gatland could do while also
being Lions coach...

My assumption is that as an international coach you're used to
quite a bit of travel anyway, plus the last year has vastly
improved everyone's ability to work over video conference and a
lot of coaching now centres on video, GPS and statistical
analysis.
I could see a senior mentor role being the sort of thing that a
coach could do largely remotely with focused time in the UK. I
think Venter spent a day or two each fortnight in the UK when he
was in that role for Sarries.
That would probably lean heavily towards an SA based coach -
I've had colleagues who have done a long term commute from the
UK to SA, and it's an overnight flight both ways with limited
jet lag because the time difference is small.
As for exclusivity, as a top level international coach you have
a stronger negotiating position than most other people,
especially if you're doing something that doesn't directly
conflict with what you're doing in your main job.
And then there's the opportunity to keep an eye on some
potential national players who happen to be based in SW London.

In my estimation, we haven't had a decent Director of Rugby
since Dean Richards left.
John Kingston, Conor O'Shea, Paul Gustard - none of them were
any cop - I could have done as good as job as they did.
What about getting Mark Evans in on a part-time basis?
