Maybe it's like the Baldwin situation, and he signed to move
before Gustard left?

Mike is in the form of his life at the moment, back to his best
and as the commentators mentioned is even offloading these days
as well :-) don't want him to go but with the financial issues
we and all clubs have due to covid, you can't take any risks and
unfortunately we could only offer a 1 year contract. I'm gutted
if he's going and personally would have given him the 2 year
contract but I understand exactly why they could only guarantee
the one year. I will miss Mike but wish him the very best if
he's decided to go.

It has been great to see Mike back to form recently and would
like to think he'll stay another season. It's great how he came
back so strongly from that horrible injury last season too.
That said, he's 35 - 36 in the summer so regardless of how well
he's playing, retirement will be very much in his thinking.
Therefore, I certainly won't begrudge him thinking what's best
for his overall career, and if that's Newcastle then so be it.
That's not to say I'd like it...

I'm sure Brownie doesn't read this website but comments on here
over the last 18 months were hardly 'We love you'.
MB is certainly looking far better in a Gustard-free environment
- as is the whole team.
I would guess the move to Newcastle is about having a longer
term future as a coach - and not about money over the next two
years.

I don't think it's about prolonging his playing career - at his
age he won't have much more to go anyway, more the coaching
opportunities etc that go alongside it.

Taking my heart out of it, I think this might be for the best.
Brown is playing great at the moment, but we need to look
forward. In the past there have been a couple of times we have
extended deals for players that maybe, in hindsight was not the
right thing to do. I know some have said "change your mind,
stay" etc but it might not be his choice. The club might be
looking forward and have someone they want to come in (and maybe
Brown is a sacrifice for that). And that player might not be a
FB, it could be we have a number one target out there for a
different position and we dont want to miss out, but maybe we
need a slice of Browns cap space.

Happy for him to stay, but equally happy for him to leave.
At this stage of his career he needs to be thinking about what's
next, and I think Quins is probably not the right place for him
to transition into coaching; he's too close to the current
squad, and we don't have an obvious spot for a coach that he
could fill. If Newcastle have an offer on the table that helps
him make the shift, we can't begrudge him that.
By the time he leaves he will have played over 350 games for
Quins, which is an unparalleled achievement. That he still has
gas in the tank to add to that elsewhere is something to
celebrate... at least until he plays against Quins and then we
can experience first hand just why every other team's fans seem
to hate him.
The key for me is that we replace him with someone who at least
has the potential to offer the same assurance at the back. There
are a few fullbacks in world rugby who offer more in attack, but
there are hardly any who rival him for positioning and control
of the backfield.

I believe a few of our current players coach at local clubs, and
I know that some of our current and recently departed coaches
also did some coaching while they were still playing, but I've
not heard that Brown currently does any. I might be wrong, and
I'm not saying that he shouldn't go into coaching just because
he's not doing any now, but does anyone know if he is actually
coaching anywhere at the moment?
I agree with Poorfour. I'd be very sad to see him leave, and
he's playing good rugby at the moment, but equally if he did
leave then it would be perfectly understandable and not
necessarily the end of the world. Until fairly recently he was
going through a prolonged period of patchy form. Despite his
desire and commitment, it seems likely that he'll suffer more
dips in form over the next couple of years, and probably become
more injury prone. It's not guaranteed, and he might leave and
then show us what we're missing by having another few years
right at the top of his game. I guess that's the gamble you
take.
What would be really gutting though is if, like Robshaw, we
don't get the chance to cheer him off on his final game.
