STEELE SIGNS ON FOR MORE WITH QUINS
Wednesday, 10th March 2021 @ 12:00
HARLEQUINS IS DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT SCOTLAND INTERNATIONAL
SCRUM-HALF SCOTT STEELE HAS RE-SIGNED WITH THE CLUB
A summer arrival from Gallagher Premiership rivals London Irish
last year, Steele, 27, has fast become a valued member of the
senior Harlequins team, providing fierce competition for the
nine jersey alongside the likes of fellow internationals Danny
Care and Martin Landajo.
The Dumfries-born halfback made a fast start to his career in
the Quarters, scoring three tries in seven appearances during
the tail end of the 2019/20 season.
The former Scotland U20 international soon impressed senior
national selectors during his first few months as a Harlequin,
earning a call-up to Gregor Townsend’s Scotland squad and has
since played twice at Test level to date.
Commenting, Steele said: “‘It was a no brainer for me to re-sign
at Quins. It’s an exciting group we have at the Club at the
moment. It’s something I’m grateful to be a part of.
“Getting my opportunity at Quins has helped me play some of my
best rugby, and go on to get capped at Test level, which has
always been a goal of mine.
“I’m looking forward to repaying Quins for giving me that
opportunity and can’t wait to meet the fans and play in front of
a packed Stoop in the Quarters.”
Harlequins Attack and Backs Coach Nick Evans said: “It’s
fantastic to see Scott re-sign. He came in during a tough time
for the sport at the height of the pandemic and has made an
impressive start to his time here.
“Scott’s call-up to the Scotland squad was well-deserved after a
fast start to life with Quins, and we’re delighted to have a
halfback of his calibre put pen to paper again.
“He’s a combative nine who has shown he’s unafraid of putting
his body on the line in the tackle area and in the breakdown. He
has a great attitude and we’re looking forward to welcoming him
back from Six Nations duty over the next few weeks."

Great to hear - was worried he was gonna go north but I'm
assuming with Vellacott going up to Edi there would be no
suitors

Great news, but I thought it had already happened. I'm sure
there was an interview or something a few months ago where it
referred to him having signed up for a few more years. Maybe I
imagine it, or maybe someone let slip before it was finalised.
Anyway, it is good news and I'd have no problem with him
starting if Danny is injured / needs resting.

Great to have it confirmed. He's our best after Danny, and well
positioned to take up the mantle of first choice in due course.
What we now need is a younger backup to develop behind them.
We've got Jack Stafford in the Academy who at 23 is presumably
not too far from either leaving or moving to a senior contract,
but I haven't seen him play. Apparently he joined last year from
Munster and Ireland U20s - given their glut of scrum halves I
can't see him having international ambitions too soon.
Any thoughts on what he's like?

Pleased with this. When he has made an appearance he's not done
much wrong, certainly in comparison to Landajo. (Remind me, how
has he got so many caps?!).
Danny him and our Kiwi import should see us through next season
in my view so would ship Landajo off to ideally one of our
rivals, and then pocket his wage on adding to class back row
options/Hooker/Second row. We really do not need to sign any
backs for next season, IF brown stays, bar maybe someone in as
FB understudy. Herron should be ideally dual reg with Ealing if
they fail to come up, bit I'd also look to get in a proper 10
stand in as by next season even EJ might have to admit hes been
a pillock.

I don't think our reserve flyhalf should be dual-reg with Ealing
- that's for youngsters who have very little chance of getting
into matchday squads, no senior pro is going to accept that sort
of demotion. When would he not be in the squad (especially with
Lang heading off)?

If Ealing do come up, perhaps we could get Owen Farrell as a
direct replacement for Lang? Both Internationals who've played
10, 12 and 13, both in need of more top level game time. What's
not to like?

Massive salary, and he would still be in the England set up if
he was playing on crutches so could have both him and Marcus
away at same time..it’s no secret we’ve flourished when our 9/10
hasn’t been hampered with international call up. I actually
think if a team is to be successful you should stay clear of the
9/10 being regular internationals!
