       I thought they'd stopped the "quick conversion" trick - could be
       wrong.

       Not so much stopped as become wise to.
       If the TMO spotS an infringement before the kick is taken they
       can ask the ref to hold up the kick.
       If the kicker tries to get round this by taking a quick kick,
       the ref tends to be suspicious and have a look at the replay.
