       Squad for Newcastle
   DIR By: Bucksquin
       Date: February 21, 2021, 6:42 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Jerry Flannery says (in his most recent video interview) that
the coaches are going to "freshen up the squad for Newcastle."
Obviously we can't play our best 15/23 every single week, but
I'm sure I'm not the only one to view that statement with some
dread, given how relatively poor our second choice options are,
quality-wise, for the most part, compared to the first choice
       starters.
So — what would your team/squad be for Newcastle? How many
       changes, which positions?
NB I'm assuming Evans is unavailable through injury.

I would definitely not be making that many changes and we should
be riding the wave of the current performances. Maybe a few
changes to keep players fresh and reintroduce players coming
       back to fitness. go:
       Els
       Baldwin
       Louw
       Symons
       Young
       Chisholm
       Lawday
       Dombrandt
       Care
       Smith
       Earle
       Esterhuizen
       Northmore
       Morris
       Brown
       Elia
       Marler
       Kerrod
       Lamb
       White
       Landajo
       Herron/Lang
       Marchant/Green/Lynagh

I'd expect Louw, Els, Chisholm and Northmore all to start.
I'd like to see Green getting game time.
7 is a big problem. It'll be interesting to see if De
Carpentier gets a crack from the start.

I understand the sentiment and the logic, but after next week we
have two bigger challenges coming up, Northampton and then away
to Exeter, so we have to rest enough key players before those
matches, because that will certainly not be the time to. After
those two, we have Gloucester which could allow a bit more
rotation, you would think, before Bristol. Then another rest
       opportunity.

I’d rather we focused on taking 2 wins from Newcastle and
Northampton and then rest players (if necessary) for Exeter
away. Also the players have just come off a 2 week rest fairly
recently (and had another week off for Wuss away)

I could be wrong, but I think some might be reading too much
into JF comments about changing the squad. I think there may be
a couple (front row probably) but nothing wholesale. It would
       be pointless.

I think that Marler and Baldwin may be on the bench with Els and
Elia getting a start. I really hope Elia takes his opportunity
to show what he can do. Kerrod or Louw will be at 3. Maybe
Kerrod starting this one with Louw returning for the Saints
       game.
I wouldn't want to change the second row but Young may come in.
Back row should be Chisholm in for the injured Evans. This
worries me a bit. Evans is so important for the excellence he
offers at the breakdown. Up there with Willis as the best in the
league. Chisholm is excellent, though. Don't get me wrong!
As for the backs, I don't think anything should change. I could
see Northmore coming in but I think it would be at the expense
of a winger, rather than Marchant, who may go to the wing. I
think Care, Smith and Esterhuizen must start!
       Possible team:
       1. Els
       2. Elia
       3. Kerrod
       4. Lewies
       5. Symons
       6. Chisholm
       7. White
       8. Dombrandt
       9. Care
       10. Smith
       11. Morris
       12. Esterhuizen
       13. Marchant
       14. Lynagh
       15. Brown
       16. Baldwin
       17. Marler (or Garcia Botta if they want to rest Joe completely)
       18. Louw
       19. Young
       20. De Carpentier (could start for White if he offers more at
       the breakdown)
       21. Landajo
       22. Herron
       23. Northmore
That said, I do really want to see Green given a chance! Maybe
he gets in and Morris is rested? I can't see it this week.

Feels to me that a Chisholm White Dombrandt back row won't do
White too many favours in terms of his recently enhanced
reputation, as he's a much more effective 6 than 7, but not sure
that there's much we can do about that. Evans is such a key
       player.

I don’t want to make changes but feel this is the right time
given the need to look after players. However, I really hope
changes are not just made for changes sake.
DC may be rested as his eye looked pretty nasty after the game
and even if Evans isn’t that badly injured (I fear he might b)
he needs a week off as he can’t play every week. Think the front
row will be rotated and if Botta is fit (I don’t rate him) I
think they may give Marler a rest week.
       1. Els
       2. Musk
       3. Louw
       4. Young
       5. Lewies
       6. White
       7. de Carpentier
       8. J. Chisholm
       9. Gjaltema
       10. Smith
       11. Northmore
       12Esterhuizen
       13. Marchant
       14. Earle
       15. Brown
       16. Elia
       17. Botta
       18. Kerrod
       19. Cavubati
       20. Dombrant
       21. Landajo
       22. Herron
       23. Green
