Smiling faces

Has anyone else noticed the frequency with which the term
'playing with a smile on our faces' has been used in interviews
by various Quins players since the renaissance began? I don't
feel that we are quite at the point of 'something special going
on' but it does smack a little bit of a rehearsed phrase. That
said, I am happy with the results our grinning and gurning
warriors are beaming out, and will be looking very carefully to
check that no frowns nor grimaces are seen in this weekend's
game. Who knows, maybe a toothpaste sponsorship up for grabs?

I think it's the case where it's been said a couple of times but
picked up &. repeated by multiple channels for each instance. EG
MB says it in one interview that then gets quoted in multiple
papers (something that happens regularly where local newspapers
are involved).

I think it's because pro sports are the natural home of the
banal cliché, so you'll hear it a lot.

My guess is that the players get some sort of media training,
and there's a few anodyne phrases that they all churn out when
they're not too sure what to say - some are suitable for a win,
and others are for a loss.
One phrase that springs to mind is that they have a "long hard
look at themselves" after a loss.

Perhaps it’s more of a hint that in the recent past things were
made to be a bit miserable

I think it was Adam Hollioake when he was Surrey captain. The
players would give him a word that he had to get into his
pre/post match interview. I cant remember most of them but
Rhinoceros was one!!!

I've checked and none of them have changed their Twitter pics /
avatar to the lockdown-sceptic smiling face, so presumably it
does relate to their rugby and not their views on the handling
of the Covid crisis

I think it is an indication that something special is happening
at Quins.
With regard working phrases into interviews I recall the England
cricket team kept themselves amused by giving each other song
titles to work into press interviews whilst on tour. It went
very well until someone was given "I've Got a Brand New Combine
Harvester".
