This feels a lot like 2011. Quins are quietly putting together a
run with players who are at best fringe contenders on the
international stage, while the England team underperforms by
sticking to a gameplan and players that have been worked out.
I have a bit more faith in Eddie than most on here - he
definitely has a particular way he wants to play at any point in
time, and while we might want him to change faster, I think he
is quite happy to provoke a crisis on the pitch mid-cycle and
then rebuild from the experience.
I'd also give him credit for not sending back players in a worse
state than they go into camp, except when they get injured in
training. From 2016-2019 players tended to come back and up
their efforts in club games - in part because Eddie is so
exacting on ongoing performance. I don't like the way he
abandons players quite so unceremoniously - especially if it is
as petty as disagreeing on stats (as with Brown) or not being
able to acknowledge a contribution outside the gameplan (Danny
IIRC was dropped shortly after his match-saving performance
against Australia, which still strikes me as wrongheaded. He'd
certainly have given Faf more trouble in the Final than Willy
Heinz did).
I'm not sure Marcus would be blunted by Eddie. He seems
remarkably mature for his age - more so than Umaga - and very
able to learn what he can from a situation, good or bad, and
compartmentalise what is expected of him in different
situations. Having NEV for a mentor must help in this - a guy
with the confidence to uproot himself when the ABs wouldn't give
him the opportunities he wanted (and arguably merited) and who
was only coached directly by the DoR during his time at Quins.
He's been running the show with much older and more experienced
players around him for several years now, and doesn't seem to be
a player whose performance is all that sensitive to confidence.

More EJ magic...Willis obviously ruled out. His replacement in
the squad? Obviously going to be Sam Simmonds, or Alex..? No.
It's George Martin from Tigers. Helps he was in the shadow
squad..but still..

I think the replacement HAD to come from the shadow squad due to
Covid regulations. However, still begs the questions why
Simmonds (especially) isn't in that shadow squad.

I think what the message is "Eddie's way or the highway", and
that's what did for both Danny Care and Mike Brown. Possibly
they're used to a more collaborative approach at Harlequins
where senior players' concerns are taken seriously.

Rugby union needs to be about spontaneity again and not

It is absolutely clear that Jones’s management style is
autocratic and he is a micro manager. His communication is
aggressive and the frequent use of foul language is a sure sign
of his own insecurities.
There is no way you will ever get top performances from your
players with this approach. It worked for a time but it is
extremely likely the players do not enjoy being in the England
camp made even worse by lockdown.
The next 3 games are crucial to determine whether he is fit to
continue or not.I have serious doubts,

Despite all this, I would still bet on us being there or there
about at the next world cup

Well, for one thing England have got a very good draw - last
time we had to beat 5 of the top 10 teams on successive weekends
if we wanted to win the thing. This time, most of the major
threats are in the other half of the draw.

That's interesting. So Jones is just flat out lying about the
best teams kicking all the time...
Coaches here round on critics by saying that no team kicks the
ball more out of hand than New Zealand, a team held up as one of
the last bastions of adventure. The statistics show that the
tier one nations that kicked the ball most in 2020 were England
and France and the two who did so the least, half as much as
Europe’s top two teams, were New Zealand and Australia.
