We had the chap from Cardiff met training with us (Rich or Russ
Bennett I think??). Was here for 5 weeks and they (Cardiff)
said they were hoping/expecting a contract offer from Quins. I
did see something last week (Although I think it was just
gossip/rumour) that he could be joining Gloucs on a short term
deal to help cover 10.
If we ended up with him and an older head who is happy to play
second fiddle to Smith it would work well.

Great news on Smithy’s new contract. Always felt he would stay
around but delighted to see its looking much more likely now.
On the subject of backup, I think Cips would be too expensive to
come and be second choice and that’s before we question whether
he’d be a positive influence or not. Trouble just seems to
follow the guy around.

I don't like the Cips/Smith comparison. Yes, they are both flair
players but Smith's decision making is far superior. He can
manage a game sensibly and is far less likely to make the big
errors you see from Cips. Cips has a great show reel but he's
just as likely to hit the self-destruct button. He
single-handedly gave us the game at Kingsholm last season.
Sorry, gone off on a bit of a tangent here, but I don't like
Smith being compared with "maverick's" just because he has skill
and vision.
So no to Cips fron me. Whilst I agree we need a back-up fly half
who can replicate Smith's game, it shouldn't be Cips.
This is a bit of conundrum in terms of finding a player of the
requisite quality who is prepared to play second fiddle. I've
thought for a while now that the answer could be a full back
who's equally adept at fly half.

I think an old experienced pro is the best backup solution.
Doesn’t need / want / can play every game but is a solid 7/10
when he plays e.g Stephen Myler who’s been instrumental in The
Ospreys good form this season. The problem with someone like
Herron is he really needs a consistent run in the team to really
develop and that clearly isn’t going to happen.

Andy Goode good to be a good option from saracens. If we could
sign him.

The issue is who would want to be back up to Smith? Cipriani
wouldn't. He likes the limelight too much (on and off the
pitch). The best option is roughly what we have now....bring a
player up from the Championship lured by the chance to play for
Quins. Shingler at Ealing would be a good shout, but ultimately
if Smith is fit, he plays.
It's the Carter / Evans issue on a slightly smaller scale.

So, nothing about Smith in TRP this morning?

The problem with that, is like Herron, these players need to
play. I know some on here may not agree but I think if Herron
had a decent run he would be fine. Problem is unless Smith is
injured it will never happen. That is why an older head would
be better imho. I think West Stand Quin has nailed it in his
post

Bucksquin, I just posted what Fissler tweeted.
The Smith to Montpellier rumour was from a French rugby podcast.
I don't have any insider knowledge nor do I pretend to. I
thought it would be of interest so I posted it. Simple.
