I agree that the relegation battle isn't exciting, largely
because thankfully we're not in it. But I disagree that the
games aren't exciting, or traumatising. When a team like Irish
played us for survival, and beat us twice, that's quite
exciting! Not least because their keeness to win also denied us
Europe.

Yes maybe once but I enjoy the bottom of the table drama Quins
are not involved in. Otherwise why I would have the slightest
interest in the bottom end of the table. If there as nothing at
stake a game is in effect a friendly.
If you think the top 4 is meaningful that is ok. Usually the
top 2 are mikes ahead of the others and there are 3/4 clubs
chasing the last 2 positions. So if they are playing a team at
the bottom of the table what has the lower club got to play for
if there is no relegation.
I remember the season we went down when Leeds had a good run at
the end of the season I doubt that would have happened if there
was no relegation. When RL had no relegation attendances
dropped considerably.
On a purely personal level if relegation is scrapped I will not
be getting a season ticket as I will pick and choose which games
I attend. I understand that many others are happy with no
relegation but it is not for me - I just think a league with no
relegation is micky mouse.

Still got the emotional scars from that afternoon. Off topic I
know but as DOK says, the journey back was fun, heading back
home to Nottingham, an early morning visit to buy tickets at
their old Ireland Avenue ground and getting roped into help set
up tables and carry four casks of the local beer (one to each
corner flag) was a particular personal highlight that I still
look back on fondly.
The basic point is we simply hadn't been good enough that year
and as such, we deserved to be relegated and we did come back
stronger. If there had been ring fencing, would that have
happened?

Im still undecided either way, but if there was ring fencing, we
would not go down, so coming back up is not an issue

Ampthill are taking part. Scottish are the only ones who aren't
so it's an eleven team completion with Saracens to be promoted
regardless!

have some great memories of playing in the champ, Pertemps Bees
was brilliant, Cornish, Bedford, great fans and really enjoyed,
way better than the previous year served up by Staunton who was
absolutely appalling all season and singlehanded took us down
(not just that one kick & not that I hold a grudge). I remember
sitting next to a Newbury chairman, who couldn't get over Andrew
Mehrten was playing on his pitch, just sat there the whole game
enthusing over AM, was really great experience (dont want to do
it again though) :-) I'd rather keep relegation however I do
think this season if someone goes down and could have been down
to a covid given loss then that would be very unfair.

I'm not sure about this - I understand your point and it is
truly valid, but I am not sure how this would or could play out.
They still have pride in their club to play for...
They can still fight so they are not the bottom club...
They can still play to get their confidence back for the next
season...
They might have their contracts to renew or face a career in a
lower division or stay in the top one...
Who wants to finish last?
If there was prize money depending on final league place,
there'd be plenty to play for...
IF there was a relegation play off, there is still everything to
battle for - avoiding playing it or getting form back to stay
up.
IF finishing last 2 seasons in a row precipitated a play off,
there is plenty to play for...
It would depend on how the league was to be structured...
If players just gave up, would you renew their contract?
