I'm glad he wrote that, as having watched Quins under Gustard
I'd have had absolutely no idea otherwise

       > Listening to Gustard after his side’s home defeat by Bristol
on Boxing Day, it was difficult to see the union lasting. Quins
had been comfortable coping with the expected in the first half,
but when Bristol tweaked their approach, they had no response.
The players had become more reliant on coaching than they had
been under Conor O’Shea, forfeiting their spontaneity.

       This is a good observation.

The minute detail was covered in several post match interviews.
He was very interested in the detail, and liked to talk about
it, which set his somewhat apart from the post match interviews
that the DoRs of other clubs gave.
I would have thought that minute detail should be devolved to
the other coaches, otherwise it's micromanagement.

Made a fair point that some coaches can come in and change the
culture of the club, but to do that you need to be a good man
manager and communicator. For example Arsene Wenger brought a
new culture to Arsenal and at first the players thought he was
mad and resistive, but he got them to buy into it and when they
saw the results it was having they all were on board. I don't
think Quins players ever saw their game improving under Gustard
so it's a much harder sell and I got the impression he wasn't a
great man manager or communicator either.

Also, Wenger came in and got them playing a more attractive
style which was probably more enjoyable to play. Same with Lam
at Bristol. Gustard seemingly wanted the players to buy into
turgid rugby. Every now and then he'd say something about Quins
DNA or attacking ethos, but you never got the impression he
meant it. It's why we mustn't get diamond in.
The ideal scenario would be Easter eventually taking over from
Richards at Newcastle, getting a few years as DoR there, making
a success of it, then coming back to the Stoop in 5-10 years
       time

Could we have a rule that anything about the toxic blob of
pointlessness that is Andy Goode is marked O/T? He is such a
moron I don’t think his views on anything should be considered
to have any connection to reality.

I think Gustard’s first season was misleading. Overall it wasn’t
a bad result, but this idea that making top four is some massive
achievement is rubbish. It’s like a premier league football team
getting excited about finishing 7th. Okay you get a chip in the
game as a result. But it’s just one small chip, it’s like
walking into Vegas with one chip, thinking you’re going to walk
out a millionaire. You might, but it’s very very unlikely.
Plus we didn’t even manage fourth.
Plus there were several games in that good little run which we
were just lucky to win. So yes there was a bump, but it was
       pretty small.
I thought Gustard was going to achieve a lot more. I believed it
for a long time. But his post match analyses were painful. If
that’s this famous detail, surely Quins is better off without
       it!

Imo we need a heavyweight coach who is a strong dominant
character such as Lam Richards Cockerill and Diamond and is
       given the full DOR role.
