I agree with poorfour, Marler is probably the best scrumager. I
also totally understand that he wouldn't want to spend 8 weeks
in a "bubble" and not see the family. I don't think I would like
it and my wife isn't expecting.

I wouldn't have thought that Joe is concerned about the £ as he
must be earning a bob or two from booksales?

Slightly OT but Underhill now out of the 6n with injury with
Willis taking his spot. I'm actually excited for this change and
if he performs as well as he has done in the prem, Sam might
find his spot taken.

I didn't mean to suggest that he's dropped out because he
doesn't think he'll play. It's pretty obvious why he's dropped
out and it's completely understandable - fair play to him.
My comment was really about some other players, and following on
from comments care made on last week's bbc pod. We've seen that
jones tends to get players into camp who then never get anywhere
near the matchday squad, or if they do, they get 2 minutes at
the end. That includes the "apprentices" but also more
experienced players. For those players, to be in camp for 8
weeks, getting beasted in training, without any realistic
prospect of getting some decent game time, it might be quite
hard. Then again, they might well be perfectly happy

I am excited about this too, it sounds horrible as a player is
injured but injury seems to be the only way new players get into
jones matchday squad.
Way to many players are in on banked credit.

Fair point (and it wasn't just your comment I was responding
to). I think for those players, it depends a bit on where they
are in their careers. For younger players wanting to make the
step up to International rugby, 8 weeks of exposure to Eddie's
coaching group is a worthwhile investment in your career. For
those who have been on the fringes of the squad, perhaps less so
- but then you're locked in to the process and can't really say
no, and you never know what might happen.
Marler is kind of unique in that regards, in that he's
sufficiently well established that he can step away and still
have a realistic hope of getting back into the squad when he's
ready to return. Until Genge or Obano show that they are clearly
ahead in Eddie's mind

Also Joe can step away and seemingly not worry too much if he
gets back in the team or not.

Yeah, I think Joe's probably made peace with the fact that his
international career could end at any point. I wouldn't be
surprised if he considers all of this "post-retirement" phase as
essentially bonus time and enjoys it for what it is.
