Having just read Marler's autobiography, I was a bit surprised
by his inclusion in the first place. He's withdrawn/retired from
international duty twice before and Eddie has shown great
patience sticking with him when there are a good crop of younger
English props coming through.

I gather Marler has withdrawn from the squad for personal
reasons.

I think that's what people are talking about already, Max.
Eddie does seem to have a lot of time for Joe, which is good to
see. Will be fun watching Obano get his chance though.

HARLEQUINS AND ENGLAND PROP JOE MARLER WILL REMAIN WITH THE CLUB
DURING THE UPCOMING INTERNATIONAL WINDOW
Following confirmation today that Marler has withdrawn from
England's 2021 Guinness Six Nations squad for personal reasons,
the Club can confirm that the England and British and Irish
Lions star will be available for selection for Harlequins' Round
7 Gallagher Premiership fixture away to Wasps at the Ricoh
Arena, live on BT Sport, this Sunday.

He was never going to banish all his demons with one swift
exorcism. I think as far as England is concerned there are
situations where he can deal with them and situations where it's
best he doesn't risk it. He's the best judge of that, and I'm
sure he knows what he's risking by his actions.

Not sure i'd fancy being stuck at Pennyhill Park for 6 wks being
beasted everyday! I'm sure the money would make up for it
mind...which makes Marler's decision very selfless. He could
easily have taken £ and should be applauded for putting family
first and being honest to EJ that his heart isn't in this one.
Joe takes the risk every time he withdraws from an England camp
but he's still the finest scrummaging prop Eng have IMO.

If I were Joe Marler and I knew I'd likely be sat on the bench
or worse watching inferior players play for my country I'd
probably sack it off too.

Exactly. Imagine the next 8 weeks for those players Jones has no
intention of actually playing if he can help it

That's a pretty weird take. Jones has consistently picked Marler
when he has been fit and available, albeit quite often on the
bench when in my view he should have been starting.
I'm inclined to take the simpler view: we know that Joe hates
being away from his family, and I suspect he's made the call
that he won't be at his best in a bubble away from home for two
months without even the spur of crowds to play for. He's pretty
open in his book that he's not prepared to play for England when
he's not fully committed, and that Eddie understands that.
