Perhaps a chance they're banking on the Prem being ring fenced,
and so have gone for a full reset?

I'm far more concerned that in the Daily Mail article it says
that current England internationals (Marler? Marchant?) are
looking elsewhere and that Smith has been offered to other clubs

Looks like arniepie and others were right. Very sad if true and
wish we’d been wrong but the signs were there.

Here's the official wording from the Club:
  HTML https://www.quins.co.uk/news/club-statement-20-jan-2021/
       --- Quote ---
       >
       > HEAD OF RUGBY TO LEAVE WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT
       >
       >
       > Harlequins confirms that Head of Rugby, Paul Gustard, will
leave the Club. Having reached this decision it has been
mutually agreed between Paul and the Club that he will leave
with immediate effect to enable him to pursue other
       opportunities.
       >
       > Paul, who joined the Club in the summer of 2018, has overseen
a major transformation of the playing squad and departs with
Harlequins competing for the second consecutive year in the
Heineken Champions Cup. Having narrowly missed out on
qualification for the playoffs of the Gallagher Premiership in
his first season, Harlequins has continued to develop over the
last two years. The Club finished sixth in the interrupted
2019/20 Gallagher Premiership campaign and it reached the
Premiership Cup final, narrowly losing to Sale Sharks in the
       COVID-19 delayed match.
       >
       > The Club thanks Paul for his tireless energy and commitment
over the last two and a half years. His passion and drive to
succeed have been evident throughout his time at the Club.
Everyone at Harlequins wishes Paul and his family all the very
       best for the future.
       >
       > For the remainder of the current season, Billy Millard,
General Manager of Rugby, will oversee the existing experienced
coaching team of Jerry Flannery, Nick Evans and Adam Jones.
Billy has overseen management of the coaching team and all of
our rugby operations since joining Harlequins in 2018. He is
hugely experienced having coached the Australian Sevens team for
four years, been Head Coach and Director Rugby for Sydney
University, Head Coach for Melbourne Rebels, Attack and Backs
Coach at Cardiff Blues and Connacht, and Backs Coach with the
       USA Eagles National Men’s team.
       >
       > The Club will determine the optimum future structure for its
coaching team and will confirm any further changes and
       appointments in due course.

I absolutely love the club and recognise our potential. But I
also recognise that we are very inconsistent. Gussy was really
trying to change that and push to regularly being a top 4 team.
I do/did believe in him and think he would have got us there in
       time.
He said before the Exeter game that Quins are not a club who
have frequently or regularly been at the top level (although we
have had our moments). He was hoping to break through that and
create an environment for a sustained challenge.
If it is true that he has gone, I am gutted it ended this way
and wish him well for the future.

I'd be tempted to see if Richard Cockerill wants to come back to
England. We need a hard-nosed coach who won't stand for lack of
effort but who has good rugby knowledge.
Steve Diamond is definitely hard-nosed... but a bit too much so
for my liking, and his own good most of the time. No to him.

As soon as I heard the Ashton comments on the podcast a few wks
back it was obvious all was a shambles behind the scenes. No
idea of the ins/outs of it all but maybe Robbo was keeping the
players in line last year and this year it's all spilt over into
       meltdown territory.
I know I love to get shouted down but give Ben Ryan a crack....

Bye. Need strong statements of intent now. Sign up Marcus, March
       etc. First order of business.

I normally never believe the Daily Mail for news but they seem
to be only accurate on rugby.
If the story of Smith being offered to clubs are true then I
won't renew my season ticket. I want the club to be ambitious
and Smith has been one of the most exciting talents to come from
the academy. To offer him out and let Marchant go seriously
questions the direction the club wish to take.
I will still support Quins but I will be picky with games if the
       club seriously lack ambition now.
Of course that is only if the fact Smith is being offered out is
true. Wanting to leave is one thing - A New DoR can turn things
around but to offer players who we should be building a team
       round is repugnant.
