I know this is only a rumour and clubs probably bid on players
all the time with no move ever coming about, but it is crucial
we hang on to Smith. No positive spin could be put on him
leaving, and there are few 10s in the world I'd be happy with as
his replacement if he did leave

Are we sure that this is not the "old" rumour?

I’ve also seen it reported that Bath have signed an as yet
unnamed South African fly half.
Could be Tian Schoeman as he was being linked to them back in
December.
They also have Orlando Bailey in their academy who is supposed
to be the next big thing.

11th January 2021 Steven
2. Marcus Smith
Bath have reportedly launched a huge move to try and sign
Harlequins star, according to the Mail Online. The 21-year-old,
who has also been linked with a move to Lyon in the Top 14, will
be out of contract in 2021 when his current three-year contract
comes to an end.
Smith, who currently earns £230k per season, is one of the most
exciting prospects in world rugby could potentially double his
earning to around half a million with his next move. Bath, who
are desperately short of fly-halves, have seen moves for other
high-profile fly-halves, such as Handre Pollard and Finn
Russell, fail in recent times.
DID YOU KNOW? Born in the Philippines to a British father and a
Filipina mother, Smith picked up the game of rugby union at the
age of seven with Centaurs RFC when his family moved to
Singapore.

I’ll be surprised if Smith commits his future to Quins
considering what’s in front of him. Hopefully he might do a
Robshaw, but with his talent I fear the direction of the club
might be enough to make his mind up.

He’s a must keep. Think the Bath rumour is an old one rehashed.
The wage data is also out of whack from what I understand. I was
at an event with a club official when he signed his last
contract and they said the figure quoted above was not correct.
That said, the Mail tend to have a better handle than most but
think this is speculative at a time when big name transfers seem
quiet.

Jonny Wilkinson joined Newcastle and stayed with them throughout
his England career (1997-2009). Throughout that time Newcastle
were hardly a powerhouse of the rugby elite. Only in the latter
days of his career, once his England role was finished, did he
leave for Toulon and win a Heineken Cup Medal.
Why should we expect Smith to behave any differently? He is
being coached by NEv and providing Quins look after his physical
and mental well-being, pay him the going rate and give him the
freedom to express himself, he should be happy to stay as a one
club man. Why are folk so keen to project a mercenary attitude
upon him.
