I find it fascinating that the quoted price for an average house
near Guildford is £588k. You probably wouldn't have to drive
half an hour to nearly halve that.
Kermitpower, Danny Care aside, why do think being within walking
distance of your main place of work is that important, or
relevant?

Your point has no relevance unless you believe that the urge to
play for Quins and only for Quins is so massive that players are
willing to make huge financial sacrifices to do so.
Yes, it is of course possible to find something within half an
hour of Guildford for half that. Typically, it's going to be
something like this 3-bed terraced house in Aldershot. That's
within 30 minutes of Guildford.

HTML https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86659915#/
Why would you, though, when you could play for Gloucester and
for exactly the same £290k you can get something like this 4 bed
detached home a couple of miles from Kingsholm?

HTML https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/74869374#/
Alternatively, maybe you keep one eye on the fact that as a
professional rugby player your career could be cut short at any
time, so you want to play it cautious? I'd challenge you to
find anything that even remotely close to Guildford that
compares to this 3-bed semi within walking distance of Kingsholm
for £175k...

HTML https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/85606375#/
And that's just Gloucester... If you don't mind playing on a 4G
pitch, why not swap your crappy 3-bed terrace in squaddie
central for a 5-bed detached home and £20k in change to replace
the rather over-powering carpet within half an hour's drive of
the Falcons?

Whatever way you look at it, and wherever you decide the players
should live, there is simply no getting round the fact that
because of the relative cost of housing, they can get a far, far
nicer home for the same money or less in the Northern and
Midlands teams than they can with the South East teams, and the
salary cap means that there is absolutely nothing that we,
Irish, Sarries or Bath can do about it without cheating and
running the risk of the sanctions Sarries faced. The supposed
level playing field is anything but.

I agree 100% with the last post, the case made is irrefutable.
If you’re an elite sportsman you’re presumably going to expect a
decent lifestyle in return, and that’s before you even consider
the impact in some cases of a partner also expecting the same.
There may be exceptions for true fans, and those coming from
local well-heeled families in the relative area (e.g. Robshaw)
but at a squad level this will definitely always be an unfair
constraint on Quins versus most of the other teams.

There are villages round Guildford which are cheaper at least
one of our Saffers is in Chilworth which is under 20 minutes
from training in reasonable traffic or just over 5 miles. The
main criteria for the villages is train service Chilworth is on
the east/west line with 1 train an hour so houses are cheaper.
But lovely walking area and one great pub run by Saffers with
great Sunday Brae!

Again, I'm not saying that I necessarily agree with the idea of
a London weighting, though the arguments above are quite
persuasive, but I really don't think anyone can seriously claim
that prices in London and the south-east are not significantly
more than elsewhere in the country. As someone currently living
in SW London and looking to move out of London, I can assure you
that you get much, much more for your money outside of London.
Of course I could find a multi-million Pound property in
Cheshire, Cornwall, wherever, but average house prices around
here are just more - there can't really be any argument

It has always been more expensive to live in London. In 1968 we
could not afford to live in London so we ended up in Molesey.
You pays your money and takes your choice on whether to commute.

Players without wives and children tend to house share don't
they?

Across the premiership a lot of the single players share houses.
Don't forget that a lot of the "squad" players, especially those
early on in their careers will be earning somewhere around
£30k-40k. Hard to afford a place to yourself in a lot of the SE
on that sort of money.

That still misses the point though.
If you HAVE to go to London for work, then as you say, you're
stuck with either burying yourself under a massive mortgage,
commuting huge distances or finding an employer willing to pay
you enough to live in London and pay the associated housing
costs without burying yourself.
Professional rugby players, however, don't have to go to London,
so they don't have to bury themselves under a massive mortgage
or commute huge distances if they don't want to, and with the
salary cap as it stands, the London employers are prevented from
paying them enough to live here comfortably.
