WORCESTER WARRIORS V HARLEQUINS PREMIRSHIP RUGBY PANEL DECISION
       Saturday, 2nd January 2021 @ 11:00
PREMIERSHIP RUGBY HAS CONFIRMED THAT WORCESTER WARRIORS HAVE
BEEN AWARDED FOUR POINTS AND HARLEQUINS TWO FOLLOWING THE
CANCELLATION OF THEIR GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP RUGBY ROUND FIVE
       MATCH
The decision has been made by a Premiership Rugby Panel
comprising Premiership Rugby chairman Andy Higginson, Chief
Executive, Darren Childs and Rugby Director, Phil Winstanley.
The match was cancelled after Harlequins returned one positives
test in this week's round of PCR testing. In addition, since
testing took place on Monday 28 December, Harlequins had 13
players self-isolating, of which four are front row players.
This meant that Harlequins were unable to fulfil a fixture as a
result of Covid-19, and the match was cancelled.
Premiership Regulations state that: “In the interests of safety
each team playing in the Premiership must have at least six (6)
fit and able players in the squad who can play at hooker, tight
head prop and loose head prop who are suitably trained and
experienced to ensure that on the first occasion that a
replacement in any front row position is required (whether due
to injury or consequent to a Player(s) being temporarily
suspended or ordered off) the team can continue to play safely
with contested scrums. In the event that a Club is unable to
field those six players, the Match shall be cancelled.”
A Premiership Rugby spokesperson said: "Following Harlequins’
inability to fulfil their Gallagher Premiership Rugby Round Five
fixture against Worcester Warriors as a result of Covid-19,
Warriors have been awarded the win and four league points.
Harlequins shall be deemed to have lost the match but awarded
two league points. The match score shall be recorded as 0–0.
“It is crucial that every team has six fit and able players in
the squad who can play in the front row. Anything else would
risk and health and safety of the players.”

This may be the rules but seems incredibly unfair especially if
it was caught by playing against an infected Bristol player. It
seems to penalise the team that comes out first and says we have
a problem, what if neither team can actually name a squad but
the initial team gets the penalty. Cant imagine the opposite DoR
saying oh hold on we cant raise a team either.
It also seems open to unscrupulous teams misusing.

It will be interesting next week as both us and Irish had to
       back out this week.

After the last couple of trips to Worcester I'd say 2 points is
       very generous.

Hoping this extra week means a couple of our injured boys are
now back fit again. Obviously the return of Symons and Lewies
would be massive but I also think Morris being available would
be a boost. Think he played well on the wing at the end of last
season and with Earle injured and Ashton seemingly dropped, it
would make sense to see him return to the wing.
Also does anyone know whether this game counts towards
       Esterhuizen’s suspension?

I asked the same question. If they are awarding points it would
       make sense it does.

I know that the procedures were agreed beforehand, but
Higginson, Childs, and Winstanley of the Premiership Rugby Panel
really should think through the wider implications of their
decisions. The rules they use to mitigate their decision were
       not made for these times.
I’m angry that they have decided to imply blame to the Covid
cancellations. Outside rugby, and with the exception of the
likes of Dominic Cummings, it is a generally agreed principle
that we’re all in this together and that no-one is to blame.
It’s quite right that Bristol aren’t blamed or punished for
(probably) passing Covid to Quins. And it’s quite right that our
       game should be cancelled.
But it is wrong to imply blame rather than instead declare a
null game with 2 points awarded to each team for a ‘0-0 draw’,
       or a similar non-confrontational solution.
Not only are these decisions questionable morally, but is
probably stacking up problems further down the line when a team
might accrue 24 points from 6 cancelled games through the
       ‘fault’ of opposition covid cancellation.

Whatever procedures they adopted would penalise someone. i
       can't see how it would not.  So lets accept the ruling; move on;
and applaud and support Quins for behaving in a responsible and
       appropriate manner.

Good result for Warriors I would say - with respect to Worcs,
this was one of few teams I was hopeful of beating at the moment
       🤔
