I mean, there's a reason why every coach talks about the set
piece being prime attacking opportunities. The last thing you
want as a defensive coach is their backline with good ball and a
legally mandated space to run into, where they can pull off
complicated moves and your defence - shorn of some of the best
tacklers in the side - has to cope with it.

I think part of the thinking might be fitness. By keeping the
ball in play you're making big heavy forwards turn and run. More
ball in play time should stress the oppositions fitness and, if
you believe your team is better conditioned, you should reap
benefits in the last quarter.

Good point. It's true every set piece is actually a five minute
break (or seems so). By forcing people to play for an extended
period of time you get the chance of tiring them or tricking
them into mistakes.

@DOK - is it possible to start a sticky thread where we could
collate these questions for the next "Meet the..." session or
even see if the club would respond with an article for this
website?

Can't help thinking that kicking back to the oppo is just
praying for a mistake and also admitting that you can't
penetrate their defence. Yes it may occur that you regain
possession in a broken field situation which is where Quins can
actually be dangerous but I cannot for the life of me see it as
a high percentage play. I wonder what the kick return stats are
for kick returns and retaining possession?

It's more that keeping hold of the ball in your own half is a
lower percentage play. Defences are ridiculous these days and
every ruck is a potential turnover / penalty against you.
Every team with very few exceptions behaves this way.

Correct. When in possession between their own 22 and halfway,
most teams look to kick rather than risk giving away a very
kickable penalty. Even "flair" teams like Racing and Clermont
will kick a lot. The difference is that when "its on" a teams
like Racing and Clermont are given the licence to run and attack
from deep.
I do sometimes wonder if the Quins players feel empowered to go
for it, or if they'll be chastised for not going through the
process...
