       Help Me with This...

OK - having watched the match today I was wondering...
Why do we kick the ball upfield and ensure it doesn't go out?
If we get the ball in our own 22, Mike Brown hoofs it upfield
and it arrives in the oppo's 22. They either hoof it back down,
in which case it's in the lap of the gods whether we get an
advantage, or they run it upfield. Since we have to wait for our
bloke running from the 22 to put us onside, or the receiver to
run 10 yards, they'll probably make at least the halfway line if
       they run it.
Had we simply kicked for touch and the ball gone out on the
halfway line, then assuming they won their throw they'd have
been on their 10m line by the time contact happened. At least
10m further back than keeping the ball in.
So why do we do it? (what am I not understanding?)

Defending a set piece on halfway is a lot more dangerous than
defending a counter attack of a couple of players vs a defensive
       line

Cannot help really, but could equally add Why do we ..... (add
any one of another dozen questions).
It completely baffles me as well, just part of supporting Quins.

I’m starting to think Danny would rather kick than play, that
way he’s less chance of being tackled
I know that’s harsh, but it’s constant, I’m sure anyone
preparing to play us must go, yep DC=box kick, but it’s ok won’t
       get touch

Our attack is mis-firing badly ... at the moment kicking is the
       least worst option

I apologise for the Churchillian prose ... I’m afraid I will
have to leave it to you to research it 😄😄

I don’t think the problem is Care. If it were, surely he would
be dropped? Seems pretty clear to me it is the game plan
prescribed by Gustard. Kick, kick, kick. Did I see right today
that Smith has kicked more than any other player in the prem?
       And Care is third?

I don’t think the players are fully convinced that the game plan
works or are comfortable with it . Younger less experienced
players are more likely to do as they are told but the oldies
not so. If we were winning games by constantly kicking and
taking contact then they might come round to it. Personally I
would rather we threw the ball around and offloaded and lost. At
       least it might be entertaining.

Yes, I realise this is the conclusion they've come to (probably
after studying stats, GPS tracks, personal observation and so
yes, I assume they're right) but I still wonder about it.
Ignoring the fact we can't defend a catch and drive to save our
lives, the benefit of a lineout on halfway is you have time to
set your defence. Everyone is ready for what's going to happen.
Everyone is where they should be on the field. Also you have the
       possibility of disrupting a lineout.
With the kick for territory option you've got some people out of
position, some offside until released, a speedy wing or full
back heading at the defence, you hope the defensive line doesn't
have a dog leg in it because that might be all that's needed.
Two defenders may each assume the other one is going to tackle
(as happened yesterday and the man with the ball steamed
straight through). In short, you hope the guy will be stopped by
a well drilled defence but lots can go wrong - it's a fluid
       situation.
The set piece gives you a formal defence, just kicking for
territory (especially under pressure) gives you a defence of
unknown quality. I just don't see how defending a lineout is
worse than defending someone charging at you in broken play.
