Defending 5m lineout mauls

I can't find the other thread about our maul defence - evidently
a weakness of ours, not yet sorted. Looking back at the replay,
I thought Alex Sanderson was spot on when Kay asked him why
would a team not compete at a 5m lineout?
AS: They're looking to win the shoulder battle. They want to get
underneath the shoulders of Racing when they're setting the
drive, and looking to knock them back 3 or 4 metres as the ball
goes back. You can compete and find one or two of their players
slightly high. But what Quins are doing in effect is tightening
that maul up. Because they're not splitting the front of the
maul - they're not attacking the seams, the space between the
lifter and the jumper, they're actually tightening that maul up.
By all of them hitting it en masse round the sides it's making
the Racing maul tighter - and with the weight that Racing have
got, they've made it an even easier job for Racing to get over
the line.
Any stats on success rates of competing v not competing at 5m
lineout?

The problem with that is, we very rarely if ever win the
shoulder battle. With Symons and Lewies/Cavubatu we may have
more of a chance, I would add Chisholm to that also. With Youngs
and Tizard/Lamb playing I would say our better option is to try
and disrupt them in the air. Our pack in general does not have
to the power to not compete, esp against sides like
Racing/Exeter

The beauty of competing is the ref can also award not straight
which although none were in the mole of Elia the would have been
questions I’m sure. In stead we stayed planted. Put up twin
towers or Jack n Jill whatever you want to call it and lets
cause problems.

I missed that bit of analysis by Sanderson - I tuned him out
after he answered every question pre-match by talking about how
great Sarries are!

Could it be that Sarries ARE great at this sort of thing, and
the reason is Sanderson himself..?
As Mayor West says, sign him up!
At the same time, the question is begged re: what this new bloke
Flannery is contributing; can't say I've seen a tangible
improvement since he joined us..?

There's only so much that Flannery can do with the players he's
got, though.

Im in two minds about our coaches. They were all very good
players. As coaches, have they done thier "apprenticeship"
though. Do we have too many learning on the job?? I accept you
can not have a set up full of top experienced coaches but t the
same time our seems a bit on the "young" side. Even PG is new
to being top of the tree. The one that Im really underwhelmed
with is Jones. With the prop options he has had in his time,
our scrum has underachieved IMHO. I know it takes more than
just the front 3, and the back 5 have not been the biggest but I
would still expect more. I think I am right in saying last
season our scrum was ranked the worst in the Prem?? I know the
ship has sailed but I would still have liked JK to be the
forwards man. Did not work out as the top boss but he knew how
to get a tune out of the pack.
I will add, Ive been encouraged by Els. I dont think I have
seen a scrum with him in take a step back yet?? Louw is
settling in and Trenier (although injured) has a similar rep to
Els, so positive hopefully.

....Or could it be he came to the club with just the one idea,
which he has expended without success? We still see players
latching on with poor body positions to defend mauls, and as
Sanderson says, just compressing the opposition into a more
effective drive. I cannot believe he hasn't told them not to do
so - or perhaps it's really the case that he had no concept of
Sanderson's description?
..Also, I remember some French team coming to the Stoop a couple
of years ago; they had a 4-metre pole with a loop at the top
through which, during their warm-up, they made their hookers
practise throw-ins; do we do anything like this? (-Watching
Elia, the answer is 'no'.).
