Ungentlemanly conduct?
DIR By: Aha!
Date: December 16, 2020, 12:10 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Last weekend Biggar at one stage screamed at the ref to award a
red card and frantically gesticulated that a straight arm had
been used against one of his teammates. Against his own
judgement, the ref then held up the game and consulted the TMO
who confirmed his original decision of ‘play on’. ie Biggar
bullied the ref.
For Scarlets, their captain (Hughes?) could be heard on two
separate occasions asking the ref to award a yellow card against
Bath in addition to penalties he’d already awarded. On both
occasions the ref declined.
I’ve never understood whether “ungentlemanly conduct” is within
a ref’s remit, but in my view on each of these occasions ball
ownership should have been reversed.
Surely, if they let these examples go without sanction then we
can expect to see even more of it? Or am I being naive and it's
inevitable that, as in other sports, this is already the norm?

I recall an occasion last season when Nigel Owens told a player
in no uncertain terms that he should stop encouraging him to
issue a card against another player or get carded himself. It
seemed to do the trick and IMHO definitely the right way to
referee the game. He’s a gem, is Nige.

I agree with your point, but don't give a warning. Just reverse
the penalty first time, yellow second time. As with all these
things though, it's consistency.
In the away game against Stade in that double header years ago,
Owens penalised Danny at the end for patting the Stade player
when we won a penalty. Fair enough, but he never did it
consistently. I like Owens, think he's a great ref, but he does
tend to pick his moments to award these penalties "upholding the
spirit of the game". It's the same as penalising a crooked scrum
feed once per 10 games, or enforcing the 5s "use it" once a
fortnight.
By all means penalise a player who asks for a yellow, pats the
opposition, etc, but do it every time.
On the other hand, I could sympathise with players who feel a
ref is giving them nothing and feel they have to protest. The
referee is, of course, always right, but sadly some of them are
not very good

I thought that was Barnes to Ma’a Nonu a few seasons ago.

I remember when Chris Malone had moved on from us to play for
the Not Nots. At Big Game III he came running up to the ref
(Andrew Small, I think?) after a penalty waving an imaginary
card & he was given short shrift by the ref and also by the
commentary team for doing so...

Agree with another post on here. No warnings, just penalty
reversal followed by cards if it persists!
I often wonder how long it would take premiership footballers to
adjust their behaviour en masse, if shown straight reds for
swearing at the ref and such like.
Back to rugby, I remember being really disappointed in Wayne
Barnes when he was reffing Billy Vunipola, I believe the season
before last, when he just let BV bully him. WB told him to move
several times and he refused, while claiming he was a 'grown a$$
man' (ironically, not something a grown a$$ man would say).
Should have just instantly carded him after his refusal.
A pet peeve is that there's this fantasy that it's up to the
referee to ensure the game is a spectacle. It isn't! That's
wholely up to the 30 players that take the field.

If this was the game in Stade de France it wasn't Nigel Owens it
was Alan Lewis, I think it was more than a pat on the head
didn't DC say/shout something?
I agree there isn't consistency with penalising this behaviour.

Lewis claimed that Danny shouted something (he didn't, and the
players were all willing to say so after the game). He didn't
pat an opposition player on the head.

Biggar has always been a leading proponent of obvious displays
of whinging at the ref. Consistency of punishment is key.

I'm an ex player who now refs.
Under law 9 (foul play), I think it's point 27 or 28. A player
must not do anything that is against the spirit of good
sportsmanship. It's under misconduct.
In the amateur game, we'd penalise the player, overturn a
penalty or march the offending team back ten (something that is
seriously underused in the pro game).
