Re the Smith to Bath and Eastmond to Quins rumours on there
The Smith rumour was mentioned in one place as being possible,
its then spread from there with people keep quoting it on RIL
tweets. Since then Bath have signed a SA 10 for next season.
Eastmond to Quins was mentioned in TRP a few months ago as short
term cover. Again I think its just lazy writing putting 2 and 2
together and getting 5
Id bet my house neither happen **

Why would Smith ever want to play 10 for Bath. I can't think of
a pitch less suited to his style...

I'm guessing that was before he was hit by a bus as since then
Cips became something of a fan favourite. There are plenty of
Sale fans who'd have him back in a heartbeat.
Personally I wouldn't but purley because our game is based on
Faf running the show. Having him and Cips means you have two
leaders which can be a recipe for disaster.

He is rugby Marmite. :) I've seen similar comments from Sale
fans on Twitter but I remember being shocked at the time by the
strength of their feelings. They basically felt that he wanted
out and was doing the bare minimum in training and on the pitch
until the club gave in and let him go.
He has skills, that is undeniable (that first year in
Gloucester) but he is always the story and for that reason I
wish him well but although we need back up for Marcus (and
personally I can't see him going but perhaps that's just wishful
old-fashioned rugby thinking), he wouldn't be my first choice.

Agreed - a flashy player and capable of brilliance, but clearly
not consistent enough if things are not going his way. There
were rumours about him coming to us before, and I was uncertain
about him then. Marcus has done wonders since moving up to the
first team, and I think we need to be looking for Marcus v2 for
the future before looking at Cips. I'd also rather we had a
decent solid replacement for the times he needs to be rested or
in case of injury.

Main problem for me is that he only turns up when Eddie Jones
and the TV cameras are around and then usually only for second
half. Rumoured by Owen Slot and the rest to be taking a rest
before going overseas.

He's an enigma; elixir and poison in equal measure. He's a
hugely gifted sportsman who might have played football and
cricket professionally and yet he's battled with depression for
most of his life. He's not for us but he'd be well received in
France. I'd like to see him succeed wherever he goes. He's done
some dumb stuff but he's had some tough times, not all of his
doing.
Quite possibly an apocryphal story, but once playing for the
Whitgift 1st XV they won 71-0. He scored all 71.

I don’t think anybody is denying his rugby genius, it’s just
that most geniuses are flawed and unfortunately he’s one of
them. If he suffers from depression it is understandable that
his behaviour is erratic. I hope he can learn to cope with it
better.

I was comparing Cips with Ashton this morning and thinking about
the similarities. Both are big personalities and headline
players who still command significant wedge towards the end of
their careers. Both have moved clubs fairly regularly and both
have had their issues.
The main difference seems to be that Ashton has had his problems
on the pitch (and lengthy bans) whilst Cips’ problems have been
off the pitch.
Cips seems to be seen as a problem character yet Ashton is
accepted with more or less open arms (by both our clubs).
Do we set more store by off-field behaviour?
