I think like anyone, he's grown into his role. I seem to
remember him saying at a "meet the ref" evening that he didn't
rely on touch judges much, very much "the ref is in charge". Now
he's saying more help from TMOs would be welcome. So how he is
now is just fine, he chats to the players, he clear as crystal
about what he wants or why he blew the whistle. So yes, I think
it's a shame he's retiring, but fully understand he wants to go
out at the top. Would be nice if rather than disappearing into
the legal profession he still remained attached to rugby.

That's a lovely article. Personally I like him as a referee, and
I think when the dust settles and we gaze at who remains he will
       be missed.

Excellent referee. Comfortably the best in the Premiership. Will
be a shame to see him go.

Best ref in the prem, makes mistakes as they all day, and used
to be a bit too focussed on being the star but has improved
considerably and now one of the top handful of refs in the world

Agree with the above; has improved significantly since the days
of made-up hand signals and spotlight hogging; is now probably
at the top of his game.

       .
I spent a really good 3 hours with Will Skinner on the train
from Geneva to Lyon prior to the final a couple of years ago. I
raised that actual incident with him, and his response was that
Barnes had warned him a couple of times prior to that, and in
Wills view, that whilst not to the letter of the law, he
       actually deserved it!
Will explained that the refs have to make their decision whether
they want to be everyones best mate or be aloof aka Mr Barnes.
He still held him in very high regard.
The good thing about those 3 hours was that Will asked us more
questions then we did him and was really keen to understand the
       supporters point of view.

Yes, peanuts for what they have to do.
Well not quite peanuts, and they do get a good seat to watch the
       matches I suppose.

Will be greatly missed the difference between watching a game
reffed by him or Nigel Owen and the youngsters is huge. No stop
start with them and sometimes consult TMO withou stopping the
       game.

Remember the name of Barnes being mentioned at Surrey sports
park, and was told probably the best ref that the team deal
       with.
Also been fortunate to have a couple of brief chats with Barnsey
and has always been a nice bloke to talk to and as you would
expect his knowledge of the game ( and Quins) is impressive
       Will be missed

Whilst watching games at the Stoop with Wayne or in fact other
refs too you quite often think ,what was that descision for,
only to watch the game back with the ref miked up and discover
that they are right nearly every time.
Going back to will Skinners yellow when the ball
was/wasn't out, I was more cross about the illegal scrummaging
during the fifteen minutes of resets.
