I hope this isn’t true but players move on, very few one club
players anymore....
I Think that players will, unfortunately, follow the cash over
the next few years which maybe France for a number of UK based
players, BUT honestly who can blame them in what is potentially
such a short career?

I hope this Lyon rumour is nothing more than that. Marcus has a
strong chance of making the 2023 RWC squad and he needs to be in
the Premiership to really state his case.
Theoretically, he could go somewhere like Lyon and hope that
being abroad and unavailable somehow makes him more appealing
and return just in time to make the squad, but that would be a
very risky move. I hope it’s not true and if it is, I hope he
has good advisors.

Just a little niggling thought is that Smith may not be Eddie's
type of player so he may as well go and play somewhere that
suits his game for some big bucks.

lot longer than Eddie's reign with England.

I dunno, Eddie was willing to boost him long before anyone
really knew who he was, and he's talking about Umaga now who is
closest in style to Smith than any other English 10...

I’ve seen a couple of similar posts on other forums. Eddie was
pretty much the first to identify his potential. IIRC, he was
called up to a training squad before he’d started a game for us.

He’s not going up get a call up between now & 2023 and he’s
definitely fallen down the England pecking order. I can see him
going for the money/experience

Think that's a bit strange if true.
For me Marcus has improved by quite a bit in the last couple of
years and others something a little different from the No10's
already in the squad!

Assuming it goes ahead, England are due to tour the US and
Canada next summer. I can see that being a fringe team with key
players in SA and others being given a break.
In previous World Cup years one of the warm up games as also
featured fringe players to give them a last chance to show what
they can do.
Point being there are opportunities for those on the edge of the
main squad to get game time and even go to France 23.
