I think Ugo made the point on his podcast that Joe Simmonds, as
good as he is, doesn't have to do a lot as a fly half as the
game is run for him. That might be a bit harsh but those stats
speak for themselves. I guess that's why Eddie is not convinced.

Fair point CarbonM but how is that any different from George
Ford's role with England? He just gets it, gives it to Farrell
or kicks if it's a defensive scrum. Simmonds could do that.
That said, it is a waste of a fly-half!

I think the comparison to Easter ought to work in Dombrandt's
favour except in the eyes of the most blinkered. Easter was
lambasted for his lack of pace, but he brought a huge amount of
power and created breaks and tries with his reading of the game
and ability to give and take offloads. Brian Ashton was a fan
because he had multiple aspects to his game and made it
difficult for defences to cover all the options. Lancaster
wanted a simpler gameplan and never really understood how to use
him.
Dombrandt brings nearly all of those benefits but is faster and
- now he's sorting out his fitness - gets through more of the
unglamorous stuff. He will need to be faster to the breakdown,
because that's what the new interpretation needs, but if he can
sort that he offers something unique that challenges defences.
Rugbypass's premium site, FirstXV, had an article today looking
at the game's big ball carriers this season - those who make far
more yards per game than the average player. Vakatawa was well
out in front, followed by Thorley. Dombrandt was next - ahead of
Larmour, Polledri and Hogg. That sort of impact will get noticed
eventually if he keeps it up.

The difference is that Ford has shown with Leicester what he can
do constantly under pressure (and for England, for that matter),
so Eddie knows precisely what he can do if Farrell isn't there
to help out (maybe because he's tried to "tackle" someone again!
;) ) whereas Simmonds has never had a stage on which to
demonstrate that.
Ironically in a world where many players want to move to the big
clubs to increase their chances of international selection,
Simmonds might actually benefit from a move to somewhere like
Worcester or Tigers....

Ford can do both roles and has proven it, though. He's a
brilliant gain-line 10 when the game calls for it, and his
tactical kicking is usually superb.
However I do think England struggle to shift gears and that's
all on Eddie's desire for a certain type of structured game that
waits for the opposition to creak under defensive pressure and
reasonably often it's not worked. A Plan B kind of player - a
more maverick player than Ford - might be an option there. And
that's where Smith & Umaga are really good.
Though Smith is a year or two ahead of Umaga IMO.

That looks like Avery strong team, so pleased Jonny Hill is
starting well deserved, feel a bit umm! about Firbank but
hopefully Eddie is seeing more than I have seen, let's hope so

I agree re: Furbank, would have preferred Watson to start at
fullback with Thorley on the wing. No 10 on the bench is a bit
of a risk too if Farrell has to come off. No place for Willis
either. Still, the team should be good enough to see off Italy.

Clearly not a bad team, completely agree about Watson at FB.
Still, given his track record of picking players out of
position, it's not his worst pick.
I do feel as though we were deprived of the more interesting
selection after the babas game was cancelled.

I've not seen anything from Furbank to suggest he deserves the
start but hopefully he goes well.
As for Youngs, well, I've said it plenty of times before.
Not sure Billy deserves to start on recent form.
Pleased for Hill.
Assume Joe is still not fit? Shame for Marchant but not
unexpected.
Hopefully against Georgia we see a more interesting selection,
but I wouldn't bank on it
