       England Squad Update

So, Dombrandt not in the squad for Italy, unsurprisingly Willis
is called up. Marchant is still there and Umaga called in as
well. I think that shows that Marcus Smith is much lower down
       the order.
Feel sorry for Joe Simmonds, double winner and not in the squad.

I know Umaga scored a decent try in the final, but I do think
he's getting a bit overhyped at the moment. He does a fair
amount wrong too. Even ignoring my bias in favour of Smith I'd
say that Simmonds is the better all round 10

Thought I read somewhere Marcus was injured, so my be not
       considered anyway!

Umaga is raw and Jones loves that. He keeps telling people about
when he found Matt Gitau as a kid and threw him into the
national team. From this, it can be inferred that he likes to
check over raw talents and feels that he can start to shape them
       into the player he wants.
Glad to see Robson in the squad, I just hope he gets a chance at
least from the bench. Heinz should be nowhere near the squad.
I feel for Dommers, but I am sure he is next on the list. Very
glad the clamour for Willis has not put him off! He has been the
       standout player in the league.

Also should he send Umaga on for say 10 mins at the end of the
Italy game, he locks the guy in to England qualified, Woodward
was one for doing this see how many 1 or 2 cap people he had
       during his reign

Smith is still only 21, and as much as I like him as a player I
don't think that he is better than Farrell, Ford or Simmons. I
know that youth shouldn't count against him, but he's not the
same as a Cipriani who forced recognition at a similar age.
Jones knows what Marcus is about, and I would expect it to be
another 3-4 years before he is challenging for an international
       place.
Dombrandt is another young player, but we all equate him to Nick
Easter and that's not currently the style of player that gets
games at international level. If he can improve over the ball
and keep his ability in the loose then again I would expect to
see him start to feature in the next couple of years.

All good points but if Jones is putting them back for 4 years,
they won't be there during his reign as coach, assuming he
       finishes after France 2023.
If Baxter then steps in, he'll favour his Exeter players (which
isn't an issue if they dominate the next 4 years) but if not,
you end up with a situation like the 2005 Lions where players
are picked on past glories rather than who is best.
Both could end up with no international recognition, which would
       be a shame.

Simmonds must wonder what he has to do to get a look in. Nothing
against Umaga who looks a top talent and has been brilliant all
season, but I thought Smith outplayed him when they went against
each other and Simmonds came out on top overall in the
Premiership final (although Umaga did play really well).

I'm not so sure about that!
If you look at player stats for the season and adjust for
minutes played, then defensively they're all pretty similar, but
Marcus looks to be head and shoulders above the rest.... More
tries (than the other three put together!), around 40% more
meters per carry, more defenders beaten, more clean breaks....
The stat I found most interesting, though, was kicks from hand.
       Ford = 14.43 per 100 minutes of play, Smith = 11.25 Farrell =
8.76, Simmonds = 2.43! Am I reading too much into that, or does
that tell us that Simmonds has basically never been tested
behind a pack going backwards, or that Exeter play far more off
the 9 than the 10? Yes, Simmonds might be great for England
against the likes of Italy or France, but would you want him
behind the pack against the Boks?

And that's the $64,000 question Kermitpower. Smith achieves good
stats behind a retreating pack, as does George Ford for Tigers.
How good would Smith be behind a dominant pack and Simmonds
       behind a retreating pack?
