From the Beeb:
Sale's match with Worcester Warriors has been called off after
Premiership Rugby reported six more Sharks players have tested
positive for Covid-19.
The game was originally due to take place on Sunday, but it was
rearranged for Wednesday after 19 cases of coronavirus in the
Sharks camp.
It means Worcester are awarded a 20-0 win and Sale miss out on
the play-offs.
Bath will now travel to leaders Exeter in the semi-finals on
Saturday, while Bristol go to Wasps.
Two members of Sale rugby staff have also returned positive
results from the latest round of testing, bringing the number of
infections at the club to 27 in the past seven days.
Worcester welcomed the decision to cancel the fixture, calling
it "the right outcome for the safety of all players, staff and
officials involved".
The club also extended it sympathies to Sale that a match with
such significance for their play-off hopes had to be forfeited.
While Sale admitted the cancellation is "devastating", denying
them the chance to win the Premiership title, it wholly
understands "the welfare of players, staff and officials is the
most important factor".
The Sharks are the subject of a Rugby Football Union
investigation into their Covid management after the initial 19
positive results were confirmed on Saturday.
The club once again denied reports players and staff had broken
any guidelines and protocols given to them by the RFU and
Premiership Rugby.
It also labelled claims players had gone out partying and
socialising in Manchester following their Premiership Rugby Cup
victory over Harlequins on 21 September as "completely
inaccurate and untrue".
RFU 'remains concerned'
Sale are also confident the RFU's audit will confirm there have
been no protocol breaches by the club, but the game's governing
body is maintaining "concerns" over how the situation at Sale
has developed.
"The RFU is undertaking a full and thorough investigation and is
working closely with Public Health England," said an RFU
statement.
"A summary of findings will be published in due course and we
will consider if there are any learnings for all clubs.
"The RFU has concerns about how this situation has developed and
will be making recommendations to PRL [Premiership Rugby] and
the PGB [Professional Game Board] to avoid future uncertainty
for clubs and players as well as protecting the reputation of
the game."
The cancellation of Wednesday's final round Premiership fixture,
which was due to be held at Sale's AJ Bell Stadium, means
Worcester are also awarded five points as well as the 20-0
scoreline.
The final league table sees Sharks finish fifth, three points
behind Bath in fourth, while Worcester narrowly miss out on
European Champions Cup qualification in ninth, finishing level
on points with eighth-placed Northampton.

Quite ridiculous it has taken this long to cancel the game. Sale
have come out of this affair very badly and PRL even worse in my
opinion.

Sale also said "The reason for the game having to be called off
is completely 100% our own fault. We apologise to everybody on
the planet for our players and staff being so stupid and
reckless, and in so doing endangering other peoples lives. Our
apology is complete and unreserved. It is all our fault and
nobody else's fault".
Oh!
No!
They didn't say that! I wonder why not?

I know you’ll shoot me down for this but what do you think
believe the Sale players did that was reckless?

I'm siding with you Yareet.
We have seen some unsubstantiated rumours about the team having
a few beers after the cup final.
But, the cup final was actually played before the 10pm curfew
and the rule of 6.
I remember this as there were loads of Quins fans drinking beer
at the cabbage patch pub.

Harsh on Sale as they deserved a shot at the playoffs, but has
to be the right outcome. PRL haver come out of it very badly.
I'm not sure Sale have really, but then I don't know the full
facts. Either way though, PRL should not have allowed it to be
postponed. Either 20-0 to Worcester because sale couldn't field
a team, or 20-0 to Sale if Worcester refused to play despite
Sale doing everything asked of them. Not great outcome either
way, but to postpone it and allow the rumours to circulate was
silly.
It's surprising really that the only matches which have been
cancelled, that I've heard of at least, were this one and the
Tigers Euro 1/4 final

If SAle did do something unusual to bring on this mass infection
then it would be helpful to know what so everybody else can
avoid it.

Yareet , seems to me that all the rumours of partying in
Manchester after the Cup Final are baseless ( otherwise Im sure
there would have been some evidence on SM)
However it only takes one player to get in a situation away
from the Club where he was vulnerable to catch the infection and
then bring it into the camp for it to spread like wildfire in a
training situation .
To have 20 + players with Covid is so much out of step with all
other Prem Clubs experience that someone somewhere has been
reckless/careless/ thoughtless/ dim ( delete as appropriate )
and the whole squad have suffered as a consequence .
I feel sorry for the supporters , Sharks had done enough to
deserve a place in the playoffs IMO , but that enjoyment has
been taken from them .
I would be surprised if Sharks were the only team to have this
situation in the months to come .
No one has come out of this smelling of roses , but lets hope
all the players and staff at Sharks dont suffer any long term
effects .
