       George Merrick

Released from the second year of his contract with Clermont.
Found this (translated) from French site:
TOP 14 - ASM announced this morning that second-row George
Merrick has been released from his final year of contract. The
two sides have agreed to an early release of the English player.
The club say George Merrick wants to get closer to England for
personal reasons. He will leave Auvergne in the coming days and
could bounce back quickly in England.
       Interesting, wonder where he'll go?

I remember that someone in his family was very ill. Probably
that is the reason for returning.

He did a 26m row I think for a charity as his father was ill.
Might be wrong. Good luck to him. At least he got to play over
there before lockdown. I feel sorry for players who went abroad
for the experience as much as the money and have then not been
       able to enjoy it

Agreed. Reasonable signing for someone but bad timing when
contracts are few and far between ...

This is unlikely to be a popular opinion on here but I'd take
him back. For me he'd be immediate third choice (behind Lewies
and Symons). Which says a lot about the current lack of depth we
       have at lock.

I would have him back. He would add some grunt and muscle as
he’s a big lad. Must cut out daft penalties though. It also
depends on who decided where his future lay at contract time.

Regards bringing him back, as always with these things, it comes
down to value for money. I wouldn’t have him down as 3rd choice
as I think Cavubati offers more but I wouldn’t mind bringing him
back if the price were right.

It seems unlikely to me that we’re in the market for a lock
given the financial situation of the sport and our existing
resources in senior and academy squads.
