OK. I’ll take that - fair point well made re. it being a cup
final. Perhaps we could have thrown more at them in the
circumstances.
At the same time, if you’d asked me for my prediction before the
game, I would have said close-ish for 60 and then Sale’s
superior bench changes the game when a bunch of our starters
have left the pitch.
In other words, I’m disappointed but not at all surprised.
Actually the most pleasing aspect was that we showed a bit of
spirit to come back from being 10-0 down. That’s a definite
improvement on some of our recent performances.
I also liked the fact that Evans was genuinely gutted to have
given away a critical penalty. That speaks volumes for his
character IMO and reinforces my belief that he can be a mainstay
for us next season and beyond.

Replacing Chisholm and Smith in that moment it has been the
wrong thing.
At the end of this championship, Baldwin and Landajo's contracts
end, I hope they won't stay for another season.Earle absent.
The referee was bad for both teams.
Esterhuizen I have not yet understood if he is a very strong
player, or another Travis Ismaiel.

Ultimately the difference last night were the subs. I've been
saying this for some time, but our quality drops off
dramatically once past our first XV, particularly in some key
positions.
I have to agree with Jammy, I thought we lost direction and
failed to control field positon when Lang/Landajo where on. I
didn't see one kick to turn... instead we got sucked in to going
through phases and running into traffic.
Still, more positives than negatives for me last night and I
want the spirit and determination shown against Glaws and Sale
to be the minimum standard going forward.
A bit of time for Louw, Esterheuizen and Green to bed in plus a
few shrewd acquisitions and next season should be a better one

Does anyone know the situation with next season as in players
coming/going?? The contract situation all went up in the air
and I thought one or two that were OOC had signed new deals. We
know Robshaw is off, Im guessing Van Wyk and Thomas also, but
what about Botta, Landajo, Campagnaro?? At first I did not
expect much turn around at all, but now Im starting to wonder.

I’d agree with all of this minus the last line. You can’t be
serious in making that comparison? Surely that’s a joke? ???
Esterhuizen has just arrived after months without playing any
rugby and understandably looks very rusty. Once he’s had time to
bed in, I think he’ll be a good signing.
Ismaiel was a total roll of the dice. He had a couple of good
seasons in SR and was then out with a major injury. We took a
chance on him being able to recapture form after his injury, but
he was clearly way off.
Totally different scenarios.

Esterhuizen doesn't look match fit to me compared to his
physique in the highlight reels - lacking both physical and
mental sharpness at the moment which should be cured with a
solid 2-3 weeks pre-season training. I think all 3 of our SA
recruits will be influential next season - the first 2 are just
not up to speed. A hugely disappointing result but I was
pleasantly surprised that we were leading a very strong Sale
team away from home for so much of the match. In the last couple
of matches we seem to have developed a more resolute defence and
more clinical attacking phases where we've scored from minimal
possession and territory. Those are pretty good starting points
for next season.

Going forward, I did note that Esther was gang tackled by 3 Sale
players including Manu when he was in possession. This means
that other teams might do the same which in turn must create
gaps somewhere.

Generally happy with the team last night, despite the brain
farts Sale deserved the win in the end with that last try, cant
take that away from them. Key things for me I didn't get, the
Manu tackle should have seen yellow at least, no arm and
straight shoulder to Lang, how many pens did they have with not
even a conversation from the ref? The Evans pen I thought that
was a superb bit of play I must have missed something in the
rules. Esterheuizen please learn from that and please don't do
that again.
I didn't think it was Lang that was the problem from the subs,
he was getting such slow ball and Sale were up so fast he
couldn't do anything with it our 9 was way too slow. Ref had a
stinker both ways, overturning the pen when Danny was holding
their player was comical.
was it just me or was the commentary appalling? Austin's
comments on Smiths hair that he'll never be a world class player
until he cuts his hair, Quins live off other team mistakes and
don't/can't create anything, Quins are just bullied we have such
a small pack we live off other teams scraps. Nothing about Quins
good play, when we are coming back from 10-0 to lead for much of
the game, Chris minor try etc. Such one eyed lazy commentary I
had to turn the sound off.

The stuff about the hair was a bit odd, but actually I agreed
with most of what he said and he was also critical of Sale. He
frequently referred to them as being one-dimensional and not
really being able to adapt when the straight up the middle
approach isn’t working. He also said (correctly) that their
wingers were repeatedly guilty of over-running the play and
being in a poor position to take the final pass.
He did also compliment Chisholm on his carrying.
As for his criticism of us ... he’s right. Our game plan in
recent games (definitely last night and against Gloucester) was
to play a kick-chase game and try to force mistakes. This seems
to be a deliberate strategy for away games and has been
reasonably effective. I would like to see us vary it up though
... even if we’re sticking to a specific game plan, we have the
players with the ability to play heads-up rugby. If the
opportunity is there to be more expansive, we should take it,
not just blindly stick to one plan only.
At home, we’ve tried to create a bit more. We just haven’t done
it particularly well. Perhaps if Smith had started against Bath
we could have made more of a fast start?
I am struggling to see what Long is offering in attack ATM
though. There definitely isn’t any obvious imprint of creativity
or innovation I’m seeing. Hopefully a proper pre-season will
change that.
