Robshaw and that world cup

Interesting reading Haskell's autobiography being serialised in
the Torygraph. He says that the decision wasn't taken by
Robshaw, he's been "done over" and that it "shows the mark of
the man" that he has never come out and set the record straight.
I know Haskell is a bit marmite, but I rather like his honesty
and willingness to say it how he see's it.

So whose decision was it?

Hask I think is someone whose reputation has grown since he's
stopped playing. I don't always have time to watch House of
Rugby, but he's both insightful and funny on it, (especially
when one J Marler Esq is the guest, for some reason).
That's an interesting comment on the RWC - I might need to pick
up a copy of the book. I would guess that if the call wasn't
Chris's it was either Farrell's or it came on with the water.
More generally, Robshaw copped a lot of flak for posts vs
lineout decisions throughout his tenure as captain, and I think
a lot of it wasn't justified. He made calls that nine times out
of ten his Quins side would have executed, only to find his
England side let him down.
The one that sticks in the memory is the match against South
Africa where he opted to take the points from a late penalty
that would still leave England trailing with only a couple of
minutes on the clock. But South Africa had made a complete hash
of their restart kicks on several occasions, and the England
scrum was winning penalties at will, so it made sense. when you
had a kicker who could slot one from the halfway line.. and
South Africa duly obliged, only for Mouritz Botha to try to take
the kick rather than let it go straight out.
Sometimes a guy just can't get the breaks, but it's the mark of
the man and his captaincy that he took it on the chin time and
again.

Interesting. I read an interview with Chris the other day,
discussing his highs and lows, and he still maintained it was
his decision and while in hindsight he might have chosen the
other option, he still stands by it. At the time you could see
Farrell arguing with him and based on how controlling and
prescriptive Lancaster's coaching seemed to be, it wouldn't have
surprised me if the decision came on from the coaches somehow.
Anyway, it's all pretty irrelevant now, and based on not being
able to put away and weakened Wales team, getting thumped by
Australia and even struggling against Fiji, I'm not sure a
quarter final would have gone that well

First off, I could never have a go at Chris Robshaw, given the
years of commitment and effort he has put into Quins, both on
and off the field, and whatever he does in the future, I wish
him well.
The subject of take 3 points or go for more has always been a
hot topic of discussion, and it’s strange how it all looks so
obvious what to do when you’re sitting up in the stand with a
good view of the bigger picture, as opposed to just picking
yourself up from the mud after being flattened by three twenty
stone gorillas.
One such decision that sticks in my mind was made by Chris
Robshaw one evening in Galway, when the wind and rain (of
biblical proportions) was at our backs, and we got a penalty
almost under the Connacht posts, Nev could have kicked it from
our own 22 in those conditions, but a scrum was called, and we
gained nothing, and lost the game a couple of minutes later by a
very very small margin. At the time, my disappointment was
great, but a good night out in the hostelries of Galway soon
made up for that, and in the morning, we were still proud of the
team.
These decisions can never be easy, and the captain will always
call it on how he sees the situation at that moment, in the
middle of a fierce contest, all we supporters can do is throw
ourselves behind our representatives who are doing their very
best to give us a win.

I have Hask's book on order.
I have just finished Hartley's book.
I hope Hask's book is better.
I also have Marler's book on order.

Right decision, wrong decision, history paints it's own picture.
What that incident showed me was that Farrell was already taking
over that side and feeling he was bigger than the Captain. CR
did well to let him have his say and not react.
The following day's press was interesting with Pieman Barnes
saying it showed such a mature head on such young shoulders to
speak up and challenge. Johnno said he'd have decked him.
We see the same now when he doesn't get the ball passed to him
or someone tries something different and he shows off or makes a
hand gesture. Sorry, he's a complete tool.
Hask to us is what Mike Brown is to other teams. We love him,
they despise him bit all accept that he gives 100%.

England make that call, mess up the lineout and are ridiculed
(although wouldn’t have been if we’d’ve got out of the group).
Japan make the same call, score a try and somebody makes a film
about it.

Haskell’s comments resonate 100% about all the hearsay in the
past about Lancaster’s micromanagement power point style of
management. It was said instructions to the players during a
match were about one a minute.
It is a pity Lancaster has failed to clarify what happened in
the last 5 years
